Do cities today provide a safe environment for its people to live in or are they still corrupt and full of flaws like in the past? This is a question one must ask themselves. It can be agreed that for the most part, many people have in some way experienced city life, whether it may be for their education, careers, or just for something as simple as travel purposes. Did the city feel people friendly and safe? Was it full of diversity?

These are all questions that can relate one way or another to cities in general. Jane Jacobs, author of the work “The Death and Life of Great American cities”, opens her book stating that it is an attack on city planning and rebuilding. She disagrees with the principles and aims that shaped the modern and orthodox city planning and rebuilding in her time. She states that the city planners and rebuilders personally do not care about the city and consider it as a dead object rather than a living organism. She proposes four principles in which are required to make a city a safe and diverse environment. They include high densities (of population and dwellings), mixed occupancy, short blocks, and old and new buildings. A comparative analysis was taken of three Universities which include Temple University, Drexel University, and University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) to see whether or not any of them exhibited any of the principles proposed by Jacobs to create a safe city environment.

Each of the Universities had their similarities and differences in which they contained and lacked a few of these principles. While the city may seem safer than it was in the past, and while the Universities may exhibit some of these essentials, it can be agreed that the principles that Jacobs proposes are still necessary today and are required to create a safe and diverse city environment.

Jacobs believes that there should be a high density of population and buildings and that these buildings should exhibit mixed occupancy. A vast amount people are required so that places such as the streets, parks, and other enterprises are occupied. Without high densities of people, there would be very little convenience and diversity in places that require it. As for the dwelling aspect of it, she believes that buildings need to be added all through the areas but serving for mixed uses so that people on the streets can be well spread through all hours of the day. Mixed uses include things such as entertainment, work, and shopping; keeping in mind that they are also being intensively occupied and attracting more people rather than just being there for its physical purposes. To illustrate its importance she gives an example about her personal experience at a district in Boston cal论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
