Chapter 1 Int roduction
This
thesismainly aims to find the effectiveness of Dual Coding Theory onreading comprehension in senior high schoo l.This chapter m ainly talks about thebackground of the present study , the significance of the study , the purpose of thestudy and overall structure of the thesis.
1.1 Background of the Study
Due to the new refor m of the college entrance examination, English readinghas become more and more im portant. English reading, however, has always beenhard and crucial for learning and teaching. So English reading has been received a lotof attention by many researchers.Before the 1970s, dif ferent reading models emerged such as the bottom -upmodel, the top-down model, and the inter active model. But these m odels tried tointerpret the mechanism of reading process. Based on these m odels, many readingtheories were proposed. Among them, one of the most typical theories was sche matheory. These models and theories mainly focus on the linguistic aspects instead ofnonverbal aspects. While more and more researchers noticed that not only verbalfactors but also nonverbal factors play an im portant role in the readin gcomprehension. As the cognitive psychology developed, a new reading theory namedDual Coding Theory (DCT) e merged which is a com bination of both verbal syste mand nonverbal system.Therefore, the author applied DCT to English reading in senior high school. DCT had widely used in m any fields like psychology, philosophy, linguistic and soon. DCT had been used a lot in the first language classroom, while this thesis aims touse DCT in the second language of readi ng comprehension for senior high schoolstudents.

1.2 Significance of the Study
Thereare five reading skills including li stening, speaking, read ing, writing andtranslating.Reading is the m ost important skill of five for most Chinese students inEnglish. Chinese students can expand their horizon and open th eir mind by reading.At the same tim e, Chinese studen ts will learn foreign culture and knowledge byreading. Therefore, most teachers consider the improvement of reading skill as theteaching aim.And this thesis is significant from three points of view.At first, theoretically speaking, this thes is will promote the study on the applicationof DCT to the teaching and learning of English reading comprehension in China. Theprevious study on the reading com prehension based on DCT is not broad and deepenough, while this study will give more insights and perception of this thesis to theresearchers.Secondly , the teaching method based on DCT gives more inspiration to thelearners on the reading comprehension and improves their self-learning ability. Afterclass or school students can use this theory by theirselves. And it will benefit to theirwhole life.At last, the teaching method in light of DCT will also give some inspiration to the teachers. From teachers’ perspective, teachers can use this theory to lead studentsto improve their reading sk ills by paying m ore attention to the nonverbal systeminstead of verbal system.The author thinks this thesis is significant because of these advantages. Andthese advantages also support the author to finish this study.
