Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Research Background
The Chinese nation is a harmonious big family composed of unique ethnic groups. In the process of developing education in China, the role of ethnic education cannot be ignored, since it is important for the development of ethnic areas. In particular, in recent years, the state has issued some policies on the education support of minority students, which has strengthened the confidence of minority students in learning. When more and more ethnic minority students set their goals and realize the importance of study, it will further improve the overall level of education in our country.
In this era of globalization and diversity, English has becomes more and more significant, so educators and researchers put English education in an indispensable position. English is a language and a tool of communication. Many factors will affect students' learning efficiency and learning quality, among which the most important is learning motivation.
The study of English learning motivation in China started late, and most of the previous studies were supported by quoting advanced theories from abroad. However, in recent decades, English motivation researches in China have developed rapidly, and topics and samples have become diversified. During the past fewer decades, Gardner's motivation theory (1985) was the most important motivation theory in the earth, which has played an important role in the study of second language. Therefore, most scholars and educators based on this theory to study the structure of English learning motivation and the influence of various learning factors with motivation.

1.2 Research Purpose
The results of the Seventh Population Census show that the minority population accounts for 8.89% of the total population of China. The steady growth of the population of ethnic minorities reflects the comprehensive development and progress of all ethnic groups in China under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. Therefore, minority students should follow the pace of the times by receiving better education and make contributions to society.
Based on the SDT, this thesis aims to investigate the motivation of senior high school students to learn English in minority region of China. At present, this theory is seldom used to study the English learning motivation of Chinese learners in China.
