CHAPTER TWO LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Research Status of Text Analysis Theory in Reading Teaching Abroad

(1) Research on “textual patterns”

Different researchers have found that the analysis of the text patterns is in favourof promoting their reading comprehension ability, their enthusiasm for making athorough inquiry of articles, and their ability to identify language structures in readingteaching. Riskos and Dalhouse (2011) mention that in the process of reading teaching,students need to be guided to analyze the text pattern, give examples of the textstructure and analyze the implied causality of the text. It is a good way to locate thefactors that affect the students’ reading comprehension; the analysis of the textualpattern is conducive to increase the students’ interest and involvement in theclassroom and facilitate the improvement of reading ability. Dilkilitas and Bora (2012)claim that based on a survey of native speakers of Turkish and non-Turkish, and acomparative analysis of teacher’s teaching mode about text analysis, it is found thatcompared with non-native speakers, native speakers can understand and use thetextual pattern taught by teachers in class more easily. Herbert (2014) supposes that“textual patterns” applied to reading teaching shows that students under the guidanceof textual pattern have the ability of recognition about the grammar and the structureof the text more quickly. Through case study, Padilla (2016) says it is found that thereare different effects on students because text with different structural patterns.Therefore teachers ought to clearly guide students to analyze text structure in readingteaching.

2.2 Research Status of Text Analysis Theory in Reading Teaching at Home

(1) Research on “textual patterns”

Many studies have indicates that textual patterns could improve students’ textualawareness (Liu Dengjuan, 2007); textual patterns have theability to optimize students’reading mode (Sun Rong, 2004); textual patterns could be used as reading strategiessuch as prediction and inference (Liu Dengjuan, 2007; Xia Hou Fusheng, 2009); andtextual patterns can help students have better reading performance (Yin chengzhi,2008). Based on the results of the reading proficiency test and the results of the pretestquestionnaire, Pan Chunying and He Chunying (2013) takes the non-English Majorfreshmen of Harbin Cambridge University as the research object. From theperspective of text patterns, they discuss the influence of text patterns on theimprovement of reading level and the use of reading strategies. It also finds that theteaching of text patterns can help students improve their reading level and help themapply meta-cognitive, cognitive and affective reading strategies. Based on the resultsof this study, it is found that the analysis of textual structure could help non-EnglishMajors improve the reading proficiency.

Xu Yingju’s Empirical Study (2001) on the teaching of the textual structure tonon-English Majors in Liaoning Normal University shows that the application oftextual structure teaching in English reading class can significantly improve theEnglish reading level of non-English majors. The teaching of text structure analysiscan improve students’ English reading ability, especially in the teaching of narrative and expository texts.
