t the prevailing classification is the distinction betweennormal accents and contrastive accents. A normal accent refers to the accent structureof a sentence in the absence of a particular context, which can be predicted bysyntactic or phonetic rules. The rule of strong information occurring at the end(Behaghel 1909) and the end-weight principle (Quirk 1973) express the samemeaning, that is, a normal accent usually comes at the end of a sentence. Conversely,a contrastive accent depends heavily on the specific context and appears in differentpositions according to the speaker’s communicative intention.

4.1.1 Analysis of Questionnaire Results

The questionnaire is utilized to investigate senior high school students’ presentconsciousness and habits of strategy usage of lexical inferencing in English listening.

The using frequency standard of language learning strategies propounded byOxford (1990: 300) is utilized as a reference to ensure scientific analysis of thecollected data.

As shown in the table above, the mean value ranging from 1.0 to 2.4 indicates alow level of strategy using frequency; the mean value between 2.5 and 3.4 stands for amedium level of strategy using frequency; the mean value changing from 3.5 to 5.0represents a high level of use frequency.

Chapter Five Conclusion

5.1 Major Findings

Based on the analyses and discussion above, the major findings are presented.

Firstly, in English listening, senior high school students’ overall use awareness oflexical inferencing strategies reaches a medium level. To be specific, they sometimesthink about how to infer unknown words and try to transfer their already masteredmethods in reading to listening comprehension. However, their consciousness ofcollecting targeted methods is at a low level, that is, they generally do not paysufficient attention to collecting listening-oriented lexical inferencing methods whichcomprise accents, pauses, intonations and so on by themselves in daily study. Inaddition, senior high school students as a whole tend to use meaning-focusedstrategies and monitoring strategies more frequently than evaluating strategies andform-focused strategies.
