Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the study
The rapid development of economy and technology in the 21st century puts forward new requirements for the cultivation of talents. All countries in the world are following the new trend of development and exploring the key competencies that can make people succeed in the new century. On March 30th, 2014, the document “Opinions on Comprehensively Deepening Curriculum Reform and Implementing the Fundamental Tasks of Moral Education” promulgated by the Ministry of Education of China first proposed that key competencies should be the main field of curriculum reform. At the same time, it is also put on the agenda to study and draft students’ key competency system and academic quality standards.
The 21st century is an era that attaches great importance to knowledge. Learning is not only the acquisition of knowledge and the reproduction of memory, but also the active thinking learning. This requires that the school curriculum and teaching must change with the times. On the basis of knowledge and skills of disciplines, the educational goal of the developed countries makes clear the trend of inherent essential characteristics of discipline education. It emphasizes high-level cognitive abilities such as critical thinking, decision-making ability, problem solving and self-adjustment, social skills such as communication and collaboration, and personality characteristics and attitudes such as reflective thinking, self-discipline and sense of responsibility. Therefore, the research on key competencies is highly concerned by international education circles.
1.2 Significance of the Study
Classroom evaluation is a process of judging, digging and promoting the value of specific classroom teaching activities. As an important part of education evaluation, classroom teaching evaluation is of great value and significance in promoting school teaching improvement, realizing students’ all-round development and teachers’ professional growth. At present, there are various problems in English classroom evaluation in senior high school, and it fails to roundly evaluate the teaching effect and learning effect. There is even inefficiency in teaching evaluation. The evaluation method is unitary. And the selecting functions of teaching evaluation are increasingly prominent, while the function of promoting students’ all-round development is obscured and diluted. In fact, the aims of teaching evaluation are to facilitate students’ learning and teachers’ teaching.
The acquisition of key competencies is to promote students’ all-round development and lay the groundwork for lifelong learning and development. Based on key competencies, evaluating English classroom teaching can promote students’ all-round development and improve teachers’ teaching.
