本文是一篇高中英语教学论文,作者结合本研究中发现的挑战,根据研究结果提出在高中词汇教学中使用SAM的建议。首先,对于SAM应用于高中二年级学生词汇教学的研究,这里有一些建议。(1) 有必要增加实验样品的数量。样本规模越大、范围越广,结果越具有代表性。(2) 延长实验阶段的持续时间。实验在研究中使用的时间越长,学生接受的词汇训练就越多,研究结果也就越科学。

Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research Background of the Study

In China,vocabulary is always important when teaching English in the classroom because itis one of the three elements of the English language.Vocabulary learning is an indispensable partof any language learning process.Students should master vocabulary first because it is the key tounderstand what they hear and read before communicating fluently with others.Masteringvocabulary continually improves their ability in four main aspects;listening,reading,speaking,and writing.Wen’s(1993)study shows that vocabulary learning helps to improve Englishproficiency because students with rich vocabulary can read and listen easier,which canmotivate them to read and listen more.Thus,vocabulary learning promotes reading and writing,which demonstrates the significance of vocabulary in the study of English.

The National English Curriculum Standard for General Senior High School(2020)putsforward higher requirements to senior high school teachers.Students are requested to learn4000-4200 words and phrases after finishing all the courses at the high school stage.It isunderlined here that teachers should pay special attention to improving students’awareness ofsense groups in context and word formation.Teachers are encouraged to focus less on teachingisolated words and more on teaching vocabulary semantic connections so that students couldlearn words in context.

1.2 Research Significance of the Study

The purpose of this study is to validate the effectiveness of English vocabulary teachingbased on the Spreading Activation Model through experimental research.Therefore,the researchsignificance of this thesis is primarily presented from the two perspectives:theoreticalsignificance and practical significance.

1.2.1 Theoretical Significance

This study explores how students learn words through the Spreading Activation Model basedon the semantic network,which can broaden the application scope of the model.Secondly,thestudy combines linguistic and psychological theories with SPSS software;therefore,findings of this study are more or less beneficial for the development of psychological and linguistic theories.At last,this study is about vocabulary teaching and vocabulary learning,so the model thatcombines vocabulary teaching and learning can help to advance theories of English learning andteaching.This study also adds the concept of the Spreading Activation Model in senior highschool English vocabulary teaching to some extent.

The origin,presentation and characteristics of Spreading Activation Model are introduced.
