摘要:本文是一篇高中英语教学论文,本研究以高考英语听说测试为背景,通过问卷调查、有声思维方案和访谈等方法,调查了高中生英语听说策略的总体情况。

Chapter 2 Literature review

2.1 Definition and classification of Listening and speaking strategy

2.1.1 Definition of English listening and speaking strategy

Though the study on language learning strategy starts in the 1970s,there stillwere so many debates on some key issues,such as the definition and classification oflearning strategy,the stability and variability of learning strategy and so on.However,there are some representative definitions of language learning strategy are as follows.

Rubin(1975),the first one who defined the term“language learning strategies”as‘any set of operations,steps,plans,routines,used by the learner to facilitate theobtaining,storage,retrieval and use of information’,summarized the characteristics ofthe excellent language learners in the foreign language learning process:seizing allopportunities to practice foreign languages,making good use of context to guess themeaning,stressing both language form and language meaning,monitoring the entirepractice process,and having good psychological quality,not afraid of makingmistakes or losing face.Stern(1983)proposed that strategy is best reserved forgeneral tendencies or overall characteristics of the approach employed by thelanguage learner,leaving techniques as the term of reference to particular forms ofobservable learning behavior.Chamot(1987)suggested that learning strategies aretechniques,approaches or deliberate actions that students take to facilitate the recallof both linguistic and content area information.Cohen(1998)proposed that languagelearning strategy refers to the learners’conscious or semi-conscious behaviors andmental activity,having clear goals.Generally speaking,despite the divergence on thedefinition of language learning strategy,language learning strategy not only can besome general learning methods,but also some specific techniques,which can be externally observable behaviors or internal mental activity,facilitating Englishlearning and enhancing the learning efficiency.

2.2 Theoretical bases

2.2.1 Autonomous learning

According to Holec(1981),the term“autonomy”refers to the ability to takecharge of one's learning.Autonomy learning is a perennial dynamic process,wherestudents can independently set aims and purposes,select materials,methods and tasks,organize and carry out the chosen tasks;and choose certain criteria for evaluation.Inother words,students themselves not only know what to learn but also know how tolearn by mastering some suitable strategy for learning efficiency.Besides,whatpermeates this autonomous learning study is the belief that'in order to help learners toassume greater control over their learning it is important to help them to becomeaware of and identify the strategies that they already use or could potentially use'(Holmes&Ramos,1991,cited in James&Garrett,1991,p198).Therefore,language learning strategies are closely linked with the autonomous learning.
