iploma stage.  Students may, in exceptional circumstances, apply for direct entry to the MSc stage of the course but they must complete two modules to achieve 30 credits prior to embarking on the Dissertation. Normally the modules taken are Research Methods (Research Proposal) and Fieldwork Placement.

2.3 Fees
Students will be required to meet all fees and expenses incurred on the Masters programme.

2.4 Programme of Studies
The award will be based on the submission of a dissertation of 20,000 words.   Students will select their area of study in consultation with appropriate members of staff.  This will normally build upon the work undertaken for the research proposal in the Diploma stage.  Irrespective of subject, potential students will be required to produce a research proposal for approval.

2.5 Relationship of the MSc Dissertation to the Postgraduate Diplom Research  Proposal   
Graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma stage of the course will have completed a written research proposal on an approved topic. Students electing to study for the degree of MSc will normally be expected to develop their research proposal topics further for the dissertation. For students who have previously been given permission to proceed to the Masters stage and who wish to change from their approved Research Proposal topic, new dissertation proposals of approximately 2,000 words outlining the topic, the research methodology  and plan to be followed must be submitted for approval.  If a proposal has not been submitted and agreed the research will not be supervised or allowed to go forward.  The potential supervisor and the External Examiners need sufficient information to enable them to assess not only the candidate but also the suitability of the intended research topic.  Therefore emphasis upon an adequate research proposal is most important.  Proposals approved will be submitted to the External Examiners for information.

2.6 The Research Proposal
Fuller details of the preparation and contents of a research proposal are available in the Research Methods module and assignment guidelines.  However, as a brief reminder, any research proposal should be preceded by an initial literature search which should be undertaken to ensure that the proposed topic has not been previously covered or, if similar research has been done, that there remains scope for further  work. The proposal itself consists of:

a. Provisional Title representing the research as it stands (although it might not be the title of any completed dissertation in the future)
b. Statement of Research Problem general subject area and background of the research and specific aspects of the topic investigated (this may include selective evidence of work which you have already undertaken in the area)
c. Literature Review 'state of the art' report outlining relevant research, theory and practice already existing in the field, reviewed critically, identifying key ideas and sources
d. Action Plan the plan, procedures, and methods to be developed and followed during the research, incorporating discussion of information and data gathering, and a work schedule identifying the stages of research
