Chapter One Introduction引言


1.1 Research Background研究背景
The role of errors in language learning has changed a lot with the development of linguistics andfurther studies on linguistic errors, especially in 60s of the 20thcentury, Chomsky put forth the differencesbetween language competence and language performance, and find that there are other factors thatcontribute to the difficulties and errors when studying the second language.Many linguists have already achieved substantial changes as to the linguistic errors, and regarded themwere far from enough to predict and explain the language errors only relying on the comparison betweenmother tongue and the target language. During 1950s, errors made by students were not acceptable andneed immediate correction. When creative construction theory took the place of the behaviorism theory inthe late 1960s, errors were believed as inevitable outgrowth of learners' hypothesis-testing and could belearnt from for both teachers and students. Besides, the traditional teaching method "every wrong should berighted" has its limitations which easily bring about mental pressure on the students thus influencing thelanguage competence development. Right now, people begin to focus on analyzing and studying the errorsmade by the students to know and explain learning strategy and the course of error occurrence.During serving as an intern for Affiliate Middle School of Henan Normal University, the author findsthat students frequently make many errors in the process of learning, such as errors in reading or errors intranslation. However, no matter what painstaking efforts teachers and students make, errors seem to beunavoidable. Therefore, learner's errors have long been a troublesome problem for English teachers.Writing is usually considered to be the most important among the four basic skills in language learning.The writing of EFL students reflects their comprehensive language competence. In the view of testing, thecomposition can be seen as examination of language output.https://www.51lunwen.org/guidelines/  Firstly, it is one of the most exact and efficientway to exam learner's language competence to some extent, including vocabulary, grammar, syntax andpragmatic competence. Besides, it exemplifies the accuracy, fluency and appropriateness of the languageusing. So students' writing may show the problems in the present teaching of language skills, and the errorsin writings are especially remarkable, which should be paid much attention.


1.2 Research Significance研究意义
This thesis places a focus on collecting the lexical errors made by senior students of Affiliate MiddleSchool of Henan Normal University, and will be carried out by quantitative analysis and qualitativeanalysis to find out the distribution of errors from the aspects of language knowledge, linguistic categories,and error sources in the hope of improving Chinese learners' writing proficiency, learning condition and theteaching methods.
