(2)How does multimodal teaching mode influence the English vocabulary breadth of students in senior high school?

(3)How does multimodal teaching mode affect the English vocabulary depth of students in senior high school?

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Research on English Vocabulary Teaching

Vocabulary  is  the  foundation  of  language.  The  total  number  of  words  and  phrases  in  a language is called vocabulary. Harmer (1990) once said that the structure of language is like the skeleton of a human. Vocabulary to language is what organs and flesh to a human. If there is  no  vocabulary,  language  activities  like  reading,  speaking,  listening  and  writing  can’t  be carried  out.  With the  advancement  in  English  language  teaching,  it  was  not  until  the  1990s, vocabulary is eventually attached great importance to. The following will review the progress of vocabulary.

2.1.1 Research on English Vocabulary Teaching Abroad

At the end of the 18th century, English vocabulary teaching began to appear in western countries.  At  that  time,  grammar-translation  enjoyed  great  popularity  in  Western  English. People  learned  English  because  they  wanted  to  read  literature.  Teachers  at  the  stage  didn’t have  the  concept  of  vocabulary  teaching.  There  was  no  doubt  that  vocabulary  teaching  just played  a  minor  role  in  language  teaching.  Learning  grammar  rules  to  translate  classical literatures was the main  teaching content at the particular stage.
