, such as inferring grammaticalrules from the text and consulting dictionary. Block (1986) defined reading strategy asa process of changes in which readers consciously interact with the reading content.Gamer (1987) also believed that reading strategy is a series of behaviour adopted byreaders to actively participate in constructing the meaning of the article when reading.Wallace (1992) believed that reading strategy is a reading method used by readers, and readers will consciously adjust their methods according to different types ofarticles and their purposes. Aarnoutse& Schellings (2003) believed that readingstrategies are a series of cognitive behaviors of readers in the process of reading inorder to understand the profound meaning of the article.

2.2 Reading Models

Reading models can help us better understand how mental processes participatein the whole reading process and can be used to explain and predict the readingbehavior and process of readers.

The earliest studies of reading models appeared in the early 19th century. Withthe development of cognitive psychology, the researchers in the 1960s and early1970s conducted a large number of studies on the psychological processes of readersin reading. According to the different mental processes of readers, researchers haveproposed three reading models: bottom-up model, top-down model and interactivemodel.

2.2.1 Bottom-up Model

The bottom-up model, which originated in the 1960s, focuses on the function ofthe text itself. It is closely associated with the behaviorism of the 1940s. In this model, reading is considered as a linear process and a decoding process. When seeing text, the reader first identifies letters, words, phrases and sentences, which then evolvesinto paragraphs and finally into the meaning of the entire text. Gough (1972) arguedthat reading is a recognizable and perceptible process from letters to sentences.Recognition of letters and words is a key step in reading. Getting the full meaning ofthe text comes from understanding each word in the text. Skillful readers can decodewords quickly, whereas struggling readers can only identify the meaning of wordswith the help of context. Therefore, as long as the readers have mastered the basicknowledge of words and grammar, they can recognize the words, phrases andsentences and paragraphs, and finally get the main information of the whole text. There is no doubt that bottom-up model is a necessary skill for reading. Thebottom-up model was the dominant model in the 1940s and 1960s.
