Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Key Concepts of Textbook Redevelopment
The related terms about textbook redevelopment(for example,textbooks,teaching materials,coursebook,etc.)are defined and distinguished in this section byreferring to relevant data.Meanwhile,the introduction of the new English textbookfor senior high schools(PEP Edition)is also presented here.
2.1.1 Textbooks vs.Teaching Materials vs.Coursebooks
The term“teaching materials”can be used in both broad and narrow sense.Broadly speaking,teaching materials refer to“the teaching/learning materials cateringfor teachers’teaching and students’learning in both practical teaching andextracurricular tutoring”(Cheng Xiaotang,2002:1).They comprise printed materialsand electronic materials,such as textbooks,supporting workbooks,tutoring materials,newspapers and magazines,video tapes,slides,pictures,tapes,courseware from thenetwork and so on.Teaching materials in the new Curriculum Standard also refer toteaching materials in the broad sense,including textbooks,teachers’books,workbooks,activity manuals,reading materials,audio and video materials,cards,teaching aids,etc.(the Ministry of Education,2018).
Narrowly defined,teaching materials refer to the textbooks used for classroomteaching,which are an important part of teaching materials.“In English literature,textbooks are often taken as coursebooks,and sometimes the word‘course’is directlyused instead”(Cheng Xiaotang,2002:2).The word“coursebook”is used to mean thecommercially published textbook(Bouckaert,2018).It refers to the textbook whichprovides the core materials for a language-learning course.
2.2 Theoretical Foundations
This study investigates teachers’redevelopment of the new English textbook forsenior high schools(PEP Edition)based on Goodlad’s View on Curriculum,Constructivist Theory and Theory of Teachers’Professional Development.Thissection mainly discusses the theoretical foundations of this study in detail.
2.2.1 Constructivist Theory
Constructivism is a branch of cognitive theory and its earliest proposer can betraced back to Piaget in Switzerland.He proposed that cognitive construction is anactive process of meaning construction based on learners’existing knowledge andexperience,which is also the core of Constructivism.Later,many psychologists andeducators(such as Bruner,Ausubel,Gagne,etc.)enriched and developedConstructivist Theory,forming a relatively complete theory and paving the way for itsspecific application in teaching process(Fan Lin&Zhang Qiyun,2003).
