CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION
1.1 Research Background
The Eighteenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China clearly put forward that Education performs its fundamental mission of fostering virtue and attach great importance to the curriculum reform. To “make a better China story and make China voice better heard” become one of the key points of English curriculum reform. The new curriculum reform of general high school was launched under this background. The new curriculum implements the fundamental task of “fostering virtue” proposed by the 18th Party Congress, and revises China’s high school curriculum standards into a guidance document for high school education with Chinese characteristics. In 2018, the Ministry of Education promulgated the English Curriculum Standards for General High Schools (2017 Edition) (hereinafter referred to as the New Curriculum Standards), which emphasizes the important role of Chinese culture in cultivating students’ core literacy in English, and clearly states that “English learning should develop an open and tolerant attitude, deepen the understanding of the motherland culture, enhance patriotism, strengthen cultural confidence, and establish correct values, world outlook, and outlook on life” (New Curriculum Standards, 2018, p.2). In the context of the new era, the importance of Chinese culture in high school English textbooks and teaching has been increasing.
1.2 Research Purpose
The textbook is an important part of language teaching, and the source of language teaching ideas and activities. Most teachers use textbooks to help students learn English. (Yan, 2014, p. 81). Similarly, the cultural content serves as the basis for much of the culture input learners receive and the guidance to teachers’ culture teaching. Therefore, the cultural content in textbooks carries the mission of nurturing people. The content of Chinese culture in textbooks is an important carrier and source to cultivate the core literacy of cultural awareness. The purpose of this study is to explore the selection and representation of Chinese culture in the PEP New Senior English for China, and to explore the concepts and nurturing values that the presented Chinese culture wants to convey and the rationale for such representation, so as to answer the fundamental educational questions of who, how, and what kind of people to nurture, and to provide teachers with ideas and suggestions for better understanding the Chinese cultural content and elements in the new textbooks and for teaching and nurturing people.
CHAPTER TWO LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 Definitions of Key Concepts
2.1.1 Chinese Culture
The term “China” has both a geographical and national significance, as well as an ethnic and cultural significance. Geographically speaking, China includes the mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan of the People’s Republic of China and their coastal islands.
