1. Welcome note and introduction
Business does not take place in isolation. Every business is a part of, and is affected by, government regulation. Political factors can determine the rates of
taxation on profits, and regulation of business activities. Social factors can determine which products are becoming more popular, and which less popular, over time. This module helps you analyse the links between business and government.
In this module, we point out the ways in which regulation affects companies operating in England and elsewhere. Our intention is to get you thinking about the ways in which companies have to react to legal requirements. Many countries have broadly similar regulatory environments governing utility industries, the environment, competition, employment, and protecting consumers.
This module will open your eyes to the range of issues that businesses must consider when planning for the future.
Please note that we use open lecture material published by the Massachusetts
Instutute of Technology (MIT lectures in the tables below). Our text, Viscusi et al (2005) is closely linked to the lecture material. A mixture of US and UK examples predominate. You are about to be taught state of the art regulation in an accessible manner.
Students are advised to read this handbook alongside the Business School’s study skills handbook and to pay particular attention to the section on plagiarism in both handbooks.

If you have a disability it is imperative that you contact the Business School Disability Officer. In Hull and for distance taught students this is xxxx, Wharfe building, room 106.
