摘要:The quality of the text, its presentation, style, structure, and layout will either detract from or enhance the contents of your dissertation, and therefore affect the assessment.

g widely, and reading critically. Reading critically is not about finding faults with the writing; rather it is about questioning what you read, reflecting on the perspective from which it has been written, who has written it and why, considering other points of view, and reflecting on whether what you have read is what you wanted to know, or is relevant to what you want to know or find out.

When you read for academic research, you are looking for clues and evidence that will help you to understand the topic itself. This means you have to think as you read, and that you have to regularly remind yourself of what you have already understood. It is helpful to keep in mind a series of questions as you read.
• What is the central idea or point that is being made?
• What evidence is there for what is being said?
• What other points are made in support?
• Are the arguments valid, persuasive, convincing and if so, why?
• Who wrote this and what was their motivation?
• What were the sources of data; by whom and why were the data collected?

The style of writing

When you are writing your dissertation, be aware of the importance of the style you use and ensure that it aims for clarity. The dissertation has to be written in a formal style and that means not in the first person but in the third person. For example, say “As can be seen…” instead of either “As we can see…” or “As I can see…”.

You must also use a written style which clearly shows which are your opinions, comments and observations based on your analysis of the information; and which information is derived from other sources. Distinguishing between your commentary and source information is usually achieved by using phrases such as 'the author of this dissertation considers that…' or ‘the survey conducted by Jones et al. indicates that…’. For information on the phrases that are often used see the Academic PhraseBank on the University’s web site at:
Presentation, namely the way a dissertation is set out, the style of the writing, the type and number of illustrations used, all need to be considered very carefully. You need to aim to show your depth of knowledge, analytical skills and enthusiasm for the subject. Dissertations need to go through several drafts and be edited thoroughly. Ensure that your syntax and presentation promote clarity, as poorly written text detracts from the content and results in text that may be ambiguous or lack any clear meaning. Your dissertation should be a pleasure to read!
Take care to use gender-neutral language (for example, using people or humans rather than mankind; synthetic or manufactured for man-made). Similarly, take care with masculine pronouns (he, his, him) when this is not a precise term referring to men.
Try to write simply and with precision. Try to write clearly and in plain English. Do not use long words, when this is inappropriate. Do not use long sentences as the meaning, or points being made, get lost in a sea of words. Do not try to make your dissertation sound“academic”, because that will almost certainly make it difficult to read and understand.
Equally avoid colloquial or informal English. The style of writing used in a magazine such as The Economist, or New Scientist is about right.
Dissertations are marked on the basis of quality not quantity. To gain a good mark your d论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
