Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Research Background
Academic paper plays an important role in modem education. It reflects thecomprehensive, researching and practical ability of a student. Nowadays, in order tocommunicate with the global experts, many Chinese scholars start to publish theirresearch findings in foreign journals, which means their papers have reached theinternational academic standard. Hence, it is crucially important for them to writeacademic paper in appropriate language.Introduction usually represents the essence and main idea of an academic paper. Acomplete, accurate, concise, and objective introduction could help the readers graspthe main points of a certain article in short time. Many scholars admit that they dohave difficulty in starting of a research paper, for they have no idea of which part isthe most important one, which point should be stated first, or what kind of languagepattern should be employed in terms of objectivity and accuracy. For them, explainingthe methodology and findings of research is easier than introducing the main idea (Shi,2002). Facing the huge amount of background materials, scholars should first judgethe core information, and then select the type of rhetorical strategies. Therefore, thestudy on academic papers introduction will help subsequent scholars improve writingand reading skills, differentiating various genres, and also, communicating withEnglish native scholars.

1.2 Brief Introduction of Academic Paper Introductions
Over the past decades, scholars had done marvelous jobs in studying linguisticfeatures of academic papers. Most of the research works can be divided into two parts:one is from perspective of genre analysis, and the other is from perspective ofnominalization. In the Genre Analysis field, Hyon (1996) has classified genre analysisinto three categories: ESP (English for Specific Purpose) School, New Rheoric School,and New Australian School.Among three Schools，the CARS (Creating A Research Space) Model proposed byJohn Swales of ESP School is the most famous one. Under the CARS model, textconsists of moves and steps, each serving different functions. In John Swales' bookGenre Analysis: English in Academic and Research Settings, he studied theintroduction section of academic papers. CARS model has been proved to be a usefulapproach to teach the writing of research and academic papers (Susan Hood, 2007).Besides the findings proposed by Swales, Bhatia (1993)，Miller (1994)，Kress (1982)，and many other scholars started to analyze various genres. They tried to generalizemodels regarding to those genre. Anderson and Maclean (1997) have analyzed theabstract section of medical academic papers. They believed that the move structure inintroductions of medical paper is slightly different from CARS model Gao and Du(2007) had studied the abstracts in Chinese medicine doctors' papers, and discussedthe discrepancy between Chinese and foreign scholars.
