Englishisation: One Dimension of Globalisation and Linguistic Imperialism, Globalism, and the English Language
Introduction
Englishisation: One Dimension of Globalisation, written by Robert Phillipson and Tove Skutnabb-Kangas, and Linguistic Imperialism, Globalism, and the English Language by Phyllis Ghim-Lian Chew, both analysize the factors influencing an increased use of English in a global scale and people’s attitude toward the phenomenon. However, the two articles are in many aspects different and even contradict each other.
Phillipson and Skutnabb-Kangas’s article covers many aspects, thus not easy to understand. For instance, at the beginning part of the main body, the special responsibility of language professionals are mentioned to ‘address the linguistic and cultural dimensions of diversity’ and to ‘investigate what correlational or even causal links there might be, and how command of English relates to contemporary power structures’, the facts is demonstrated that English is predominantly employed as the medium for most North-South links and the hypotheses are discussed that Englishisation or the study of Englishisation are affected by politics and human agency. Plus, possible factors influencing the expansion of Englishisation in Europe are analyzed and a number of unanswered questions on language policy are listed to raise readers’ thinking. To illustrate the situation of Englishisation and people’s view on it, a case study of Englishisation in academic discourse in Denmark is conducted which shows ‘a trend towards a strengthening of English’ and anxieties about ‘the invasion of English’ and some suggestions offered by the authors. Furthermore, some broader aspects of Englishisation are examined and resistance to it, including the question of whether there is any prospect of reducing English to equality are considered.
Compared with Englishisation: one dimension of globalisation, Chew’s Linguistic imperialism, globalism, and the English language is more explicit in view and attitude. The introduction concerns the reality that English is considered as ‘best suited’ for national interest in those newly independent countries and meanwhile touches on the ‘fears and trepidation’ for reserving the former colonial language, supported by a presentation of researches and works, including the introduction of several terms. Then the author further develops and proves his view by the case study of Singapore that the dominance of English is through ‘a conscious decision’. The last chapter deals with the relation between globialism and the English language which should not be seen as ‘an aspect of linguicism’.
