Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
A conclusion,with high density information,usually occurs as a relatively independent part at the end of academic papers,journal articles,research reports and dissertations.It summarizes the findings of the research,shows the advantages and importance of some certain subject,and proposes questions or directions for further study.Like an Abstract,a conclusion provides readers with much convenience when they are consulting documentation.An organized,coherent and objective conclusion can maximize the value of a document,because it can give readers a full reorganization of the whole article and inspire readers to think.
According to statistics, about 70%-80%published research articles in various fields are written in English, which brings a huge challenge for non-native English researchers.So far,the domestic research of RA writing mainly focuses on abstract.However,the conclusion part hasn’t received enough attention despite its crucial role.Some scholars have devoted themselves to researching the conclusion part in RA.Wen Qiufang and Yu Hongliang suggested that a conclusion must be brief and to the point(2004),and they proposed eight commonly used expressions in conclusions.The research of conclusions involves grammar,syntax,and semantics,etc.This thesis intends to analyze English conclusions in English linguistics theses from the perspective of transitivity,which is included in Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar(SFG).
According to Halliday,transitivity system is a semantic system,and its function is to classify people’s experience and behavior in real world into six processes: material process,mental process,relational process,behavioral process,verbal process,and existential process.The study intends to apply SFG and transitivity system into the analysis of conclusions in English linguistic master theses.There are as many sorts of text types as many kinds of situations.In fact,transitivity and situation are naturally associated(Thompson,1996).Halliday developed transitivity system for distinguishing different Processes,Participants and Circumstances of clauses.That is to say a clause,which means a representation of experience in the form of configuration,consists of Process,Participant taking part in the Process and associated Circumstances.(Halliday，2000:52).Simply speaking,the studies of transitivity are to understand how verbs create our experience.
1.2 Significance of the Present Research
This thesis can enrich the theory of transitivity system and SFG as well as provide practical guidance in English RA writing.In theory,it applies transitivity system into the analysis of the conclusion chapter,thus figure out the difference between conclusions written by native English speakers and Chinese English learners and reveals the fundamental reason for the difference in English writing.Transitivity analysis is related to the selection of words and the way clauses are arranged.The transitivity analysis usually focuses on different types of clauses,the verbs which determine the transitivity type and the participants which refer to the subjects,i.e.a person,a part of body,or an inanimate object.To sum up,transitivity system is the basic framework of a discourse.In recent years,many scholars both at home and abroad have made intensive study about transitivity system.Th本论文由英语论文网提供整理，提供论文代写，英语论文代写，代写论文，代写英语论文，代写留学生论文，代写英文论文，留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
