1 Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Research Background of the thesis
作为国际语,英语,已经放在每所大学或学院的课程设置。然而,不能否认英语教学的重点仍或多或少地把传统的语言技能训练:听力,口语,阅读和写作,这是从培养间交流的交际能力的最终目标。要成功地与来自不同文化背景的人互动,不停止生产的能力和理解语法正确的句子“(秦,1988:18)。换一种方式,简单的语言能力的发展不能满足当今社会的需求,正如莱文(1982)指出,“要知道的语言,而不是他的文化是一个很好的方法,使能说一口流利的傻瓜”。学者甚至指出,许多母语往往是更不宽容的文化失误或错误比语言的(福,2010),他们认为他们“违反发言规则”将其解释为“不礼貌”(欧胜,1983年:62),因此,文化教学和文化习得(学习)应给予特别attentionin大学英语教学
English, as an interlingua, has been placed into the curriculum setting by everyuniversity or college. However, it can not be denied that the emphasis of English teachingis still more or less put on the training of traditional language skills: listening, speaking,reading and writing,which is far from the ultimate goal of cultivating intercultiiralcommunicative competence. To interact successfully with people from different culturesdoes not "stop at the ability to produce and understand grammatically correctsentence"(Qin, 1988:18). Put it another way, the simple development of linguisticcompetence can not meet the demand of current society, just as Levine (1982) stated that"to know a language rather than his culture is a very good way to make a fluent fool”.Some scholars even point out that many native speakers tend to be more intolerant ofcultural errors or mistakes than linguistic ones (Fu, 2010) in that they regard them as"violations of rules of speaking" and interpret them as "bad manners"(Wolfson, 1983: 62).Thus, culture teaching and culture acquisition (learning) should be given special attentionin college English teaching.
Nowadays, more and more attention has been attached to culture teaching, while theacquisition of target culture is still relatively ignored by domestic scholars as only aboutdozens of theoretical articles on culture test have been published in general journals(Zhang & Li, 2010).It is not until 1959 that the term "intercultural communication" was first put forwardby Hall in his book The Silent Language. The past over 50 years has witnessed the flourishof the new research discipline, with more than 20 monographs and nearly 300 paperspublished in China from 1981 to 2001 (Li Jiongying, 2002). However, the disadvantageexisting in these researches is lack of quantitative analysis and empirical researches (LiJiongying, 2002), which is extremely serious in studies about intercultiiral sensitivity.According to Zhao Xuan (2011). only 8 empirical researches on intercultiiral sensitivitycan be searched on CNKl.With the increasing interactions with people from different cultures, it is necessary toobtain the ability of understanding and accepting target culture. Thus, the study ofintercultiiral sensitivity and target culture acquisition has proved to be particularlyimportant in China. So an empirical study on the relationship between intercultiiral sensitivity and target culture acquisition is of vital significance to culture teaching.


1.2 Purpose of the Thesis
