Chapter One Introduction


Tense fossilization has been studied a lot by linguists such as Han Zhaohong andSelinker and is considered as a typical source of fossilization in second languagelearning, because tense has always been a difficult point in the second acquisition ofEnglish. Learners often employ the wrong tenses in their utterances, even foradvanced English learners. They don’t know what grammatical meaning every tenseexactly refers to, especially with respect to the present continuous tense, present tenseand present perfect tense. They usually use the tense based on obvious and clear timemarks like yesterday, tomorrow. They will feel confused once they cannot see thetime mark. Therefore, there will be a lot of tense errors in their oral English. Whatis worse, no matter how long they have learned the tenses, this situation is hardlyimproved. Just because of this, it is of great value to study it. In this thesis, a studyon tense fossilization is initiated in order to figure out the situation of tenseacquisition in a foreign settings and to provide some help for future tense teachingand learning.


1.1 Purpose of the Study

This thesis is aimed to explore tense fossilization in the oral English of Chineselearners. Tense fossilization refers to the fossilization of tense usage. In the oralEnglish of Chinese learners there certainly will be some tense errors. What’s more,tense acquisition is always a difficult point. Therefore, there is a great possibility thattense acquisition will become fossilized in the process. The purpose of this thesis is tofind out the fossilized tenses through studying oral texts of students. Then, possiblecauses of fossilization will be explored, which is very important to the whole thesis.Last but not least, based on the analysis and possible causes, we will propose propermeasures to ameliorate the fossilization and contribute to the SLA area.Specifically speaking, five questions are raised in the analyzing process.Research question one: what are the types and characteristics of tense errors inoral English? During oral communication, learners would make tense errors. We haveto figure out what kinds of tense errors students often make.Research question two: what are the frequencies of these tense errors? That is tosay, among all these types of errors which are more prevalent and which are relativelyless prevalent? By exploring this question, we can know where the key of tensefossilization in oral English lies. Besides, it can also help us with strategies preventingtense fossilization in later oral English training.Research question three: Speaking of tense errors, are there any differencebetween learners with a high level of English and those with a relatively low level ofEnglish? This question helps to confirm which kinds of errors are relatively stubbornand not easy for Chinese learners to acquire.Research question four: what are the possible causal factors of tense fossilizationin oral English? Factors may be stated from both an external and internal viewpoint,as fossilization involves both a cognitive level and an empirical level.Research question five: what strategies can we adopt to prevent or alleviate tensefossilization?
