Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Research Background and Significance
The form of The Contemplate Spouse is represented by many letters which arewritten by Wallace Stevens. The reason why the author chooses it to be her material isthat it not only expresses a strong personal passion, but also contains many Englishlong sentences which set an obstacle to the translator. Actually there are two authorswho play an important role in the formation of this book. One is J. Donald Blount,another is Wallace himself. The author of The Contemplate Spouse is J. Donald Blountwho has collected Wallace Stevens’ letters and compiled them into a book. The letterscontained in this book can be divided into five parts according to their relationship indifferent periods: courtship (July 1904---November 1908), engagement (December1908---September 1909), first year of marriage (New York, 1909---1916), travelseparation (Hartford, 1916---1923), amassing harmony (1924---1935). In the progressof translating The Contemplate Spouse into Chinese, the author faced to a toughsituation that was the English long sentence. However, the translation of the Englishlong sentence may be the most difficult point in the process of English-Chinesetranslation. Dozen of studies on syntactic comparison carried out over the past 80 yearshave mostly focused on syntactic differences between English and Chinese, while howto deal with the syntactic differences has been seldom discussed. So far, the Englishlong sentence is an obstacle to the translator. And it forces the translator to make adetailed research and analysis to get a proper translation method. And recently, manyfamous translators have already done the research such as Zhang Peiji and LianShuneng, etc. But confusion among the translators still exists. As a result, the qualitystandard of the translated text is also uneven. The author based on her own translationpractice to illustrate four kinds of methods with a purpose to give some hints to theother translators.

1.2 Research Questions
This paper mainly focuses on the translation methods of English long sentences.And the research questions can be presented as follows: “Usually there are twenty totwenty-five words in an English long sentence, and in the longest ones, there may bemore than one hundred or two hundred words.”(Lu Yingming, 1989: 13) Generally speaking, the reasons why English long sentence is so long are: first,the sentence structure is complex; second, the modifier is a lot, especially rearattributive is long; third, content level in two or more complex sentences. The Englishlong sentences use some form methods such as the non-predicate structures,prepositional phrases, and some other subordinate clauses in sentences. The reason forthis formation is that there are many modifiers, coordinate components and nimietyconjunctions in different language structure levels. The structure of the English long sentence, entirely and totally different from theChinese sentence, is complicated and confused. So it is often unacceptable to do aword-to-word translation when we put the English into Chinese.
