Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research Objectives
After entering syntactic structures, English verbs express various grammaticalmeanings, usually integrated with lexical meanings. Unfortunately, quite a few E-Cdictionaries focus too much attention on only the lexical meaning of English verbs, tothe neglect of their grammatical meanings. For some of these dictionaries, grammaticalmeanings of some verbs are manifested in their Chinese definitions; however, this wayof definition has not been observed from start to finish. This is quite likely to give riseto difficulties of all kinds for the accurate understanding of English verb meanings onthe part of Chinese learners of English. Because English trivalent verbs, which carryvarious grammatical meanings in specific syntax, are one of the word groups mostlikely to cause this kind of defect in the Chinese definitions of E-C dictionaries, thisresearch mainly focus on English trivalent verbs to explore the practical methods forintegrating lexical meaning and grammatical meaning in the Chinese definitions ofEnglish verbs in E-C dictionaries.Tesnière (1959) termed the ability of governing nominals of verb as valence.Based on the numbers of the nominals governed by the verb in a sentence, Englishverbs can be divided into one-valence verbs, bivalent verbs and trivalent verbs. For English trivalent verbs, they can govern three nominals in a sentence and usuallyappear in different syntactic structures, expressing various grammatical meanings.Takespread for example.

1.2 Research Approaches
The subject of the present research is English trivalent verbs. We attempt toconduct a systematical analysis to figure out the explanation for the differencesbetween grammatical meanings of the same verb in different sentences from theperspective of argument roles and argument structures and put forward approaches ofmanifesting grammatical meanings in the Chinese definitions of E-C dictionaries.Detailed approaches are as follows:Firstly, the Chinese definitions of typical English trivalent verbs and examplesentences in《英汉大辞典》(2nd Edition) and Kingsoft Powerword are collected. Forbetter illustration, Some syntactic structures are also collected from COCA,Word Reference.com and https://www.thefreedictionary.com/.Secondly, in order to effectively observe the meanings of English trivalent verbs ,a classification of typical English trivalent verbs is made. And a systematic analysis isconducted from the perspective of argument structures and thematic roles to give explanations for different grammatical meanings expressed by the same verb indifferent syntactic structures.Lastly , a systematic identification, on the basis of thematic roles and argumentstructures, of the error-prone aspects of the Chinese definitions of English trivalentverbs in 《英汉大辞典》 (2nd Edition) and Kingsoft Powerword, and also theadvancement of corresponding solutions are made.

2.1 Studies on Definition in E-C Dictionaries
More and more researchers come to realize the importance of definition in E-Cdictionaries. Hu Mingyang (1982:122) remarked that definition is to a certain extentthe core issue of dictionary compiling. The quality of dictionary is mainly determinedby that of its definition.
