摘要:本文是英语语言学论文,本文以言语行为理论和顺应论为理论基础对《西游记》中建议言语行为进行了研究,拓宽了建议言语行为研究的理论视阈,充实了建议言语行为研究的内容和议题,同时也是对《西游记》研究的有力补充,有助于我们更加系统地了解建议言语行为,实现成功交际,在语言教学,跨文化交际以及人际交往等方面具有一定的参考价值。
Chapter OneIntroduction
1.1 Research Background
John Austin (1962:77) said, “To say something is in full normal sense to dosomething”. life, almost everyone can give a suggestion to someone or advisesomeone in different situations for different reasons. As a paradigmatic case of speech act,the speech act of advice-giving indubitably catches scholars’ eyes, such as Morrow(2012), Emmison and Firth (2012), Hudson (1990), Pudlinski (2012) and so on. Plenty ofstudies have been done on it, including studies on advice given on the internet (Locher,2006), on the phone (Drescher, 2012), in the face-to-face situation (Heritage, 1992) andso on.All these studies contribute to the process of getting closer to the truth of advice.Although there are so many studies on the advice, only few discussions areconcerning the speech act of advice-giving in the literature works, let alone the speech actof advice-giving in the ancient Chinese novels. Besides, most of these studies areconsidered from the perspective of face-threatening theory, and few are considered fromthe angle of Adaptation Theory. Therefore, the author chooses one of the most famousChinese ancient novels Journey to the West as the research object so as to make up thedeficiency.

1.2 Objectives and SignificanceGiving advice is common in literature. This study focuses on the analysis ofadvice-giving speech act in the classical novel Journey to the West. Through theapplication of Adaptation Theory to the data analysis, a better understanding of how thecharacters in Journey to the West put forward the suggestions is desired to be gained fromthe pragmatic perspective. The objective of this study is to explore the pragmatic featuresof advice given in Journey to the West and to find out the factors which affect therealization of advice-giving speech act. To be more specific, this
thesis plans to solve the following two problems:1. How is the speech act of advice-giving performed in Journey to the West?2. Why can the speech act of advice-giving be realized in Journey to the West?About the significance of the study, three aspects will be taken into account. Firstly,in the cultural perspective, Journey to the West is an ancient classical novel written inMing Dynasty and is well-known in the world as precious cultural treasure. The study onadvice-giving speech act can provide a deeper understanding of ancient culture. Secondly,theoretically speaking, the study on the advice-giving speech act in Journey to the Westmay add to the range of the current theories used in analyzing the ancient classical novels.Practically speaking, using appropriate ways to give advice is good to the establishmentand maintenance of interpersonal relationship or the promotion of effective humanrelations. The study on the speech act of advice-giving may help enrich our knowledgeabout advice in general and enhance our skills in performing the act of giving advice inour daily life.
