Chapter One: Introduction


1.1 Research Introduction

Acculturation and adaptation have been an increasingly prevalent topic of discussionin intercultural communications research over the past decade. Following the trend ofacculturation research, an increase in research about expatriates in China has been conducted.This is significant to the research done in Shanghai because according to the ShanghaiMunicipal Statistics Bureau, the city hosts the highest density of expatriates in China.According to the Municipal Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs, the foreign populationmade up over twenty-three percent of the national total, at around 900,000 expatriates beforethe Chinese New Year of 2020 (Xi, 2019). The research conducted so far, however, is farfrom encompassing all the factors that could influence an individual's adaptation to life inShanghai, especially in light of the recent changes that the appearance of COVID-19 in 2020has unexpectedly brought upon the world. The area of study this paper is dedicated to is oneof the less explored topics in the field of acculturation research, the relationship betweenexpatriate adaptation and the institutions that host them. This study aims to examine this relationship more closely- with specific consideration to the power institutional distance mayhave on the adaptation patterns of international educators.

1.2 Research Gaps

The literature reviewed for this study often highlighted the fact that acculturationresearch has been in the spotlight for decades now (Searle & Ward, 1990; Schwartz et al.,2011). The growing body of acculturation and adaptation research also suggests thatexpanding the range of considerations when studying adaptation topics is endless.Acknowledging the importance of narrowing adaptation research into specific and definablevariables, the initial study guiding this research project was intended to be a heavilyexploratory study with the aim of better understanding how institutional distance relates toadaptation. Preparations for this exploratory study suggested that the following research gapscould be attended to: (a) research on institutional distance is not as expansive as predicted (b)literature often considers the expatriate experience in China to be consistent across thecountry (c) COVID-19 as a variable is novel.

Firstly, the independent variable of this study, institutional distance, is a fairlyunexamined variable across adaptation research, but even less has been done specifically onthe community of international educators. Institutional distance has been considered inprevious studies done in China, but often from an economic, people resource management, orpsychological perspective (Bj rnskov et al., 2010; Lau et al., 2002). Also, the research doneon institutional distance is often fixated on linear regression comparisons to subjective well-being and institutional finance models.
