CHAPTER ONEINTRODUCTION
1.1 Rationale
English is one of the major international languages in the world, which is also themost widely used language. However, among all English speakers, the majority arenot native speakers but non-native. English has become “the common language ofchoice, among speakers who come from different linguacultural backgrounds”(Jenkins, 2009:200), which has been referred as lingua franca (ELF) and has beenemployed in various cross-cultural fields, such as international business, academicexchanges, international tourism, etc. As much of the business now operates in thisglobal market, many commercial activities take place in neither party’s first language, and English is often the language of choice. Under this circumstance, ELF isspecifically defined as BELF, which is business English as lingua franca. For BELFusers, their language competence is of considerable importance to ensure successfulcommunication with their business partners (Li, 2016:66). However, “good languagecompetence” here does not mean to use English as proficient as native speakers, butto accurately express your intentions, including not only the proper use of languagebut their pragmatic competence. Sometimes pragmatic competence even plays a keyrole in achieving successful cross-cultural communication. Therefore, it is not enoughto just know the pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar of the target language.Peoplem still need to understand the real intention of the speakers and use sentencesto achieve successful communication. Studies on pragmatics in speech acts haveshown that non-native speakers may have pragmatic failures in the target language.

1.2 Research questions
This study aims to study request strategies in business English emails written byBELF users and to examine whether the degree of directness is matched to the degreeof politeness from the point of view of business practitioners, for example, whetherthe most direct request strategy is the most impolite one. The main three researchquestions are as follow:
1. What are the characteristics of the use of request strategies in BELF emails?
2. How do the practitioners perceive the relationship between the degree ofdirectness and politeness?
3. What are the possible factors that affect BELF users’ choices of requeststrategies?

CHAPTER TWOLITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 Previous studies of the speech act of request
2.1.1 Defining requests
As one typical speech act, the request has gained much attention from scholars in thefields of pragmatics and sociolinguistics. Their first step is to define what a request is,and different researchers could come up with different explanations.
As an outstanding researcher who revised and developed the Speech Act Theory,Searle (1969) specifically classified the illocutionary acts into five categories, including directives, representatives, commissives, expressives, and declarations.
