Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research background

Punctuation is an essential part of language and provides great assistance toemotional expression and comprehension of the text (Wei, 2014). It is often used toindicate pauses, tone, and the function of words. There are several shared punctuationmarks in English and Chinese, including sentence terminators which suggest the end ofa sentence such as period, question mark, and exclamation mark, and sentenceseparators that divide the sentence into several sentence segments, such as comma, semicolon, and colon.A sentence segment could be a sentence, a verb or noun phrase,an adjective or adverbial phrase, or a prepositional phrase (Chen, 1994). There is alsoa small number of unique punctuation marks in each language, such as enumerationcommas in Chinese and hyphens in English.

Even though most of the punctuations in English and Chinese are shared andsimilar in functions, the features of punctuations, including frequency of punctuationand distribution of punctuation, might be different because of the differences insentence pattern and syntactic features between English and Chinese.

One of the biggest syntactic differences between English and Chinese is parataxisand hypotaxis (Nida, 1982). It is widely accepted that Chinese is a language featuredwith parataxis while English is featured with hypotaxis (Zheng, 2007). Hypotaxissuggests that the connection between words or statements is mainly achieved throughconjunctions or linguistic forms, while parataxis means the connection between wordsorsegments mainly relies onsemantics orlogical relationships (Zhang& Zhang,2000).This feature is fully demonstrated in the sentence structure: Chinese is typicallycomposed of run-on sentences (Lv, 1979), while English is usually made up of theclause complex (Halliday, 1985).

1.2 Research questions

The hypothesis formulated above is based on theoretical and qualitative analysis. This study seeks to test the hypothesis by finding out actual statistics about differencesbetween original Chinese and original English in terms of the features of punctuationmarks by quantitative methods rather than just qualitative analysis based on the theoryand takes it further to study whether the features of punctuation marks in translatedChinese have been affected and moved towards the punctuation features in Englishrather than complying with those in original Chinese. If they are proven to be true, thenthe study tries to find out how punctuation features change during translation practiceand what elements contribute to the degree of difference between original Chinese and translatedChinesein punctuation features,as well as whetherthereis acommon patternof punctuation features in translated Chinese that fits in with translation universals. So,in general, the study aims to answer the following four main questions:

1. Are there any statistical differences between Chinese and English inpunctuation features? If there are, what are they?

2. Do punctuation features in translated Chinese conform论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
