本文试从CBT的角度分析情景喜剧中的英国言语幽默。虽然本研究对IT人群中的英国言语幽默进行了详细的研究，但在更具体的领域可能存在一些局限性，主要体现在以下四个方面。首先，情景喜剧《IT人群》中的英国言语幽默是根据观众的罐装笑声收集的。罐头笑声不是观众的自然笑声，而是后来插入的，因此对话是否幽默可能因人而异。

Chapter I Introduction

1.1 Research Background

Verbal humor with a variety of contents and forms is considered as a powerfullanguage form of human beings, which can bring laughter, amusement and joyfulness topeople. Scholars who devoted themselves to the humor studies have carried outthorough researches from various perspectives such as pragmatics, semantics andrhetoric. In these studies, they have developed many theories to explain the meaningconstruction mechanism behind the generation and interpretation of verbal humor.However, it is still a complicated issue since each theoretical basis of the study onhumor may have some limitations. As a new perspective to study verbal humor,Conceptual Blending Theory (Fauconnier, 1997) is found to explain the inner meaningconstruction mechanism of natural language. This theory can illustrate the people’scognitive course and the thoughts during the process of communication with specificconceptual blending networks. Accordingly, western scholars started to carry out a lot ofrelated researches to explore the dynamic cognitive mechanism hidden in theinterpretation of humor. In recent years, domestic scholars have also conducted somecognitive studies on humorous utterances from the perspective of Conceptual BlendingTheory. Wang Wenbin (2004) employed this theory as the basis to investigate the onlinecognitive mechanism in the interpretation of humorous utterances. He pointed out thatthe interpretation of humorous utterances also involves cognitive processes such asspace articulation, space clash, space shift and space check. It is emphasized that thecognitive operations runs through the whole process of verbal humor interpretation. Liu Dunping (2006) and Ran Mingzhi (2012) found that the Conceptual Blending Theorycould be employed to interpret humorous utterances, so they used the four major typesof the Conceptual Blending Network to analyze the humorous utterances in which thedynamic cognitive processes of the hearers are presented when they interpret themeaning of humorous utterances. Ran Mingzhi and Luo Liang (2007) proved thatcognition and on-line meaning construction heavily depend on conceptual integrationwhich is realized by Conceptual Blending Network. According to those previous studies,scholars constantly prove that the Conceptual Blending Theory is concerned withdynamic meaning construction during the process of analyzing humorous utterances,which is considered to be of great explanatory power for verbal humor.

1.2 Research Purpose and Significance

This study concentrates on analyzing humorous utterances in The IT Crowd fromthe perspective of Conceptual Blending Theory. It aims at finding out how the Britishverbal humor is distributed under the Conceptual Blending Networks and exploring thedynamic meaning construction process of the British verbal humor in The IT Crowd.Moreover, it is also concerned with the factors that contribute to the meaningconstruction of the British verbal humor.

The purpose of the study include the following aspects.
