Chapter one Introduction

1.1 Background of the study

In  Anatomy  of  Criticism, the archetype is defined as “typical and recurring imagery, while myth is the most elementary literary archetype, and all literary types are the continuation and evolution  of  myth”  (Frye,  2006,  p.  3).  Myth  represents  the  deepest  instinctual  life.  Myth transcends time and combines traditional patterns of belief with current values to embody the power of the spirit (Guerin, Labor, Morgan, Reesman, & Willingham, 2004). Therefore, the analysis  of  literary  works  from  the  perspective  of  mythological  archetypal  criticism  is conducive to breaking through the specific social background of literary work and studying the  commonness  of  human  beings  on  the  whole.  The  archetype  is  divided  into  three categories by Frye: the oracle image, the monster image and analogy image. Both the oracle image  and  the  monster  image  are  closely  related  to  human  desire.  The  oracle  image represents  the  world  of  human  desire,  while  the  monster  image  is  the  world  despised  by human desire, such as depravity and in vain. Therefore, the study of human desire from the perspective  of  mythological  archetypal  criticism  can  endow  the  work  with  inner  spirit  and lasting charm. 

Sister  Carrie  is  the  first  novel  of  American  writer  Dreiser  and  his  representative work. Vanity Fair is the representative work of English writer Thackeray. As soon as the two works  were  published,  they  aroused  wide  discussion  among  readers,  and  the  two  heroines were also controversial. Many scholars have studied the two novels. In recent years, scholars have  mainly  studied  the  two  novels  from  the  perspectives  of  feminism,  realism,  consumer culture, comparative study, etc., but few have compared the two novels from the perspective of mythological archetypal criticism. 

1.2 Purpose and significance of the study

Ancient Greek mythology and the Bible have a profound influence on the creation of western literature. Western writers often seek creative inspiration from ancient Greek mythology and the Bible and create a series of popular works.
