Chapter OneIntroduction

1.1 A Brief Introduction to J. M. Coetzee and His Disgrace

J. M. Coetzee is a South African-born novelist, essayist, linguist, and translator. He wasborn in Cape Town, Cape Province, Union of South Africa on February 9th, 1940, toAfrikaner parents and descended from early Dutch immigrants to South Africa in the 17thcentury on his father’s side. He moved to England in the 1960s, worked as a computerprogrammer and received a PhD in synthetic computer language. Later, he went to the UnitedStates for further study, got a doctorate degree in literature, and taught after graduation. In1984, he returned to South Africa to teach English literature at the University of Cape Town.After retiring, he went to Australia and has been living in Adelaide ever since. In 2006,Coetzee became an Australian citizen and he is still teaching English and German in thecollege.
One of the reasons why Coetzee has been widely accepted in the West is the profoundthemes and the rich connotations in his novels. These characteristics enable researchers andcritics to interpret his works from various angles and literary criticism theories. Anotherreason is Coetzee’s special status as a white South African writer. It is his mixed identitiesthat enable him to interpret South African history from different perspectives and write aboutSouth African culture from different perspectives.

As a South African writer, Coetzee owns a number of honorary doctorate degrees and isone of the most acclaimed and decorated authors in the English language. Although hereceives plenty of awards throughout his career, he remains reclusive since he avoidsattending rewarding ceremonies. He is the first writer to be awarded the Booker Prize twice,respectively, in 1983 and 1999 for the works Life and Times of Michael K and Disgrace.What’s more, he is a three-time winner of South Africa’s CNA Prize and plenty of otherprizes. In 2003, Coetzee received the Nobel Prize for Literature, which made him the fourthAfrican writer to be so honored and the second South African to win a Nobel Prize afterNadine Gordimer.

1.2 Literature Review

As a prolific writer, Coetzee has been studied by Western critics since the last century.Especially since he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2003, some monographs, reviews,essays on various subjects from different critical approaches have been inspired accordingly.

In general, the research on Coetzee’s works in western academic circles can be dividedinto three stages. The 1980s is the first phrase. Coetzee has been publishing literary workssince the 1970s. Still, because his early works were published mostly in South Africa and were gradually recognized outside the South African publishing world, large-scale studies ofhis work lagged behind about a decade.

David Attwell’s J. M. Coetzee and the Politics of Writing (1993) is regarded as amilestone of Coetzee’s research.
