Chapter Two Text Schema: Inability to Understand Reality
1. Non-linear Narrative Time Readers could notice that one of the most eye-catching and non-traditional writing techniques of Faulkner in As I Lay Dying is its non-chronological narrative time. Usually in Faulkner‘s works, there remains a temporal gap between the narrator and the story to be bridged. However, in this novel he avoids the necessity of bridging the distance between the two points and exploits present-tense narration, which makes the points of narrative and action simultaneous.
Each of the minds has its own persona telling its part of the story through unconscious, involuntary narration. A sequence of present time runs through the novel beginning with the opening sentence and ending with Cash‘s final position in time. (Franklin, 1967: 59) Faulkner, in the opening sections, dealt with the sequence of the present carefully.
The novel begins with Darl and Jewel coming up from the field. They go to different places. In section two could know that Darl goes home and comes through the hall without looking at Addie while passing through the door. In section three Darl enters the back porch, and Anse and Vernon Tull are there asking about Jewel. Then according to Darl‘s clairvoyance, Jewel is with his horse. In section four which is the only section of Jewel‘s involuntary narration, he shows his thoughts. In section five Jewel comes to the back porch where he joins Darl, Anse, Vernon in discussion. After deciding that Darl and Jewel will go to town, Jewel leaves, going around the outside of the house while Darl enters the door again. Inside the house in section seven, Darl looks at Addie and communicates to Dewey Dell that Addie will die before he and Jewel come back from town. In section eight Tull and Anse converse on the porch after the exit of Darl and Jewel. Vardaman brings the fish he has caught, then goes around the side of the house to clean it. Cora comes to the porch, and Tull and his family leave. In section nine Anse muses on the road, then Vardaman returns with blood, for he cleans the fish. In section ten, Darl and Jewel are on the way to the town and he tells Jewel ―Addie Bundren is going to die‖. In section eleven Peabody a doctor, is invited to check dying Addie. In section twelve Darl through his clairvoyance sees the scene of Addie‘s death and tells Jewel ―Addie Bundren is dead‖. The first twelve sections are from Addie‘s life to her death.
2. Multiple Points of View
In addition to non-linear narration, multiple points of narration are another distinctive unconventional feature of the text structure of the novel. Faulkner avoids writing from God‘s perspective, but devotes to shifting the narration of characters to take on the story. As I Lay Dying consists of fifty-nine chapters narrated by fifteen characters. Utilizing the fifteen characters‘ unconscious narration, Faulkner not only exposes the inner thoughts of them, but at the same time gives the reader a chance to perceive that each character sees reality in a different way and they hold various views on the same thing.
In addition to chapter 57 with a third-person perspective, the rest belong t本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
