摘要:本文是一篇英语语言学论文,本文主要运用图式理论,从语言图式、文本图式和世界图式三个方面探讨本德伦家族解体的原因。

o the first-person perspective. The stream of consciousness of each character constitutes a text. This personal narrative helps the reader directly explore the complex inner world of the characters. The multiple points of view belting the meaning is profound and reflects to the reader that the characters are unable to get to know the whole thing and they are unaware of that.

On the whole, the narrators could be grouped into two parts: the Bundren family members and the town folks. ― The narration in As I Lay Dying is like two concentric circles, with Addie as the center, her family members as the inner circle, and the other characters as the out circle.‖ (Shoemaker, 1979: 102) The outsiders have their own views on the Bundrens. ―A Bundren through and through, loving nobody, caring for nothing except how to get something with the least amount of work.‖ (Faulkner, 2004: 17) Faulkner shows the complexity of characters‘ observation through the confusion and contradictions of details. For example, in Cora‘s monologue, ―I always said Darl was different from those others. I always said he was the only one of them that had his mother‘s nature, had any natural affection...‖ (Faulkner, 2004: 17) She thinks that Addie and Darl keep a deep relationship and Darl was the only one of them that had his mother‘s nature. Here readers may conclude that Addie and Darl have a really good relationship and he is the one who is favored by Addie.

Chapter Three World Schema: Inability to See Through Things

1. Repetition of Similar Scenario

Faulkner repeats many similar incidents in different characters‘ monologues. The scene of Addie lying in bed has been repeated many times. In particular, the characters have many descriptions of her noticeable eyes.

―Her eyes are like two candles when you watch them gutter down into the sockets of iron candle-sticks. But the eternal and the everlasting salvation and grace is not upon her.‖ (Faulkner, 2004: 5)

―She looks at us. Only her eyes seem to move. It‘s like they touch us, not with sight or sense, but like the stream from a hose touches you, the stream at the instant of impact as dissociated from the nozzle as though it had never been there...She has not moved save her eyes.‖ (Faulkner, 2004: 38)

The reader through Peabody and Darl‘s monologues knows that all of Addie‘s energy is all in her eyes. At the very moment of her death, her eyes suddenly glowed, which is not the death of her, but is the very beginning of her new life. Namely, her body is dead, but her spirit gets its freedom. According to the reader‘s existing schema, death is a negative and painful thing. Therefore, readers may wonder why death is Addie‘s salvation and rebirth. Their only choice is to continue reading, abnormally downgrade forwards predicting and finding the answer. Then readers can learn from the neighbors and Darl that Addie worked like a horse all her life.
