ng Profit-motivated Capitalism

The term capitalism describes an economic and social order in which society and its production is geared towards maximizing profits. Marxist economist Paul M. Sweezy contends: “The purpose of capitalist enterprise has always been to maximize profit, never to serve social ends” (86). Mainstream economic theory since Adam Smith has insisted that by directly maximizing profit, the capitalist and entrepreneurs are indirectly serving the community (Sweezy 86). The persistent pursuit for profits leads to the deterioration of ecological degradation. Companies and enterprises portrayed in The Sheep Look Up as showing little or no concern for the effect that capitalist expansion has on human society and the ecological system, leading to aggravated risks at both national and international levels.

2.2.1 Enterprises Creating Risks at Home

As the core driving force of capitalist development, capital has unconstrained cravings for the pursuit of profit. This section provides a full analysis on all the profit-driven companies in the novel, and further demonstrates that an incessant drive to accumulative wealth would definitely give birth to never-ending environmental crises and human health afflictions.

With a reference to the ideology of deep ecology advocated by Austin Train, this section further reveals that the kernel of the eco-terrorist group drifts apart from Austin’s ideal of building a risk-free community in harmony with nature, albeit the latter is hailed as a set of guiding principles by the former. Therefore, far from achieving the ideal, eco-terrorism veering from the codes of deep ecology becomes a blight in the risk society.

3.1.1 Sabotage Actions

The growth and severity of eco-terror from the 1970s to the present day is noticeable and significant. “Attacks on research facilities, farming operations, construction companies, timber companies, fishing operations, fast-food restaurants, building sites, and sport-utility vehicle dealerships are alarmingly reported” (Liddick 1). Its mounting trend has been forcing a majority of states in the U.S. to make concrete changes on laws. The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation defines eco-terrorism as “...the use or threatened use of violence of a criminal nature against innocent victims or property by an environmentally-oriented, subnational group for environmental-political reasons, or aimed at an audience beyond the target, often of a symbolic nature”.
