lent or omitted, replaced by the narrative report of speech acts (NRSA). The different representations of speech acts indicate different positions in the marriage. As Léonce is always speaking “aloud” through direct speech, his subjectivity and dominant position are indicated. While Edna’s subjectivity is hidden behind her silence and NRSA, which indicates a subordinatee and submissive position. Without a direct speech addressed to Léonce, Mou Xianfeng points out that “Chopin indirectly reinforce[s] Edna’s alienation from her husband since she is talking to a friend, not to him” (108).

Chapter Two: Living in Bad Faith

2.1 The Angel of House

On Grand Isle, there was a kind of women called mother-women, whose main mission was to “[idolize] their children, [worship] their husbands,” and “efface themselves as individuals” (Chopin 888). Among those angels of house, Madame Ratignolle was admired as “the embodiment of every womanly grace and charm” (Ibid). When she first appeared in the novel, there was an exaggerated portrayal of her: The spun gold hair that comb nor confining pin could restrain; the blue eyes that were like nothing but sapphires; two lips that pouted, that were so red one could only think of cherries or some other delicious crimson fruit in looking at them. She was growing a little stout, but it did not seem to detract an iota from the grace of every step, pose gesture. (Chopin 888)

2.2 A Puppy Seeking for Sympathy and Comfort

Another important character, Robert, awakens Edna’s passion for love. However, lacking the courage to embrace Edna’s emotional attachment, his final departure breaks Edna’s illusion of love. Robert’s withdrawal also leads to her final realization of the loneliness of human existence.

Robert was the eldest son in his family. His father died when he was young. However, his mother did not care about him because she “live[d] for [her younger son], and for Victor alone” (Chopin 930). Even when Robert gave all his money to the family, his mother did not care about him. She only worshiped her younger son Victor. Growing up without the company of his father, Robert’s sense of self was mainly based on Léonce and Alcée. The former was Edna’s husband, a successful but traditional businessman while the latter was a notorious playboy. Under the influence of the two men, Robert was on the one hand, like Léonce, traditional and conservative. On the other hand, like Alcée, when flirting with women, never took them seriously. According to Judith M. Fulry and William Ickes, “the person with a weak sense of self . . . tends to display the personality of others because he does not have one of his own” (291). As Robert displayed the personality of Léonce and Alcée, his own personality was uncertain. Analyzing his pattern of life, it can be found that he is immature and lacks the courage to make authentic decisions.
