Chapter Three: A Failed Pursuit of Authenticity

3.1  Infinite Passion for Life

During Edna’s pursuit of self identity, two women influence her most. One is Adele Ratignolle, who reminds Edna of a “mother-woman”; another is Reisz, who represents for Edna a free and independent life. Comparing these two characters, Showalter comments that “whereas [Ratignolle] is a ‘faultless Madonna’ who speaks for the values and laws of the Creole community, Mademoiselle Reisz is a renegade, self-assertive and outspoken” (46). Reisz looked down upon most people on Grand Isle because they were bound by social conventions. Unlike other women who played the piano for the sake of their children and family, Reisz played it for self-fulfillment. She dared to speak bluntly, which results in her isolation from others. Even Edna would sometimes look down upon her for her venom. However, the “disagreeable little woman” (Chopin 905) gave Edna infinite inspirations and courage to pursue freedom.

Edna was fond of music. As she listened, different images came to her mind. When Ratignolle was playing the piano, Edna saw pictures of “a dainty young woman clad in an Empire gown, taking mincing dancing steps. . . . another reminded her of children at play, and still another of nothing on earth but a demure lady stroking a cat” (906). In these pictures, adjectives like “dainty,” “mincing,” and “demure” are used to describe women, implying a kind of stagy behaviors. Besides, associating women with nouns of “gown,” “dancing steps,” “children” and “cats” also suggests Ratignolle’s identification with femininity — women should be decent, maternal, and docile. Showalter calls those fantasies “the restriction and decorum of the female world,” since “woman’s art, as [Ratignolle] presents it, is social, pleasant, and undemanding” (45). However, when Reisz was playing, “[t]he very first chords . . . sent a keen tremor down Mrs. Pontellier’s spinal column. . . . the very passions themselves were aroused within [Edna’s] soul, swaying it, lashing it, as the waves daily beat upon her splendid body” (Chopin 906). In Ratignolle’s music, dynamic verbs like “clad,” “take” and “stroke” present a physical world. Edna was an observer who watched women dancing, children playing.

Conclusion

The Awakening tells the story of Edna’s gradual awakening. Realizing her existence as an independent person, she began to resist the control of her husband. Besides, as she perceived the illusion of domestic harmony and the oppression of marriage, she decided to abandon domestic trifles and pursue true love. Furthermore, under the influence of Reisz, she also tried to seek an independent life and self identity through painting. However, Robert’s withdrawal broke Edna’s illusion of emotional fulfillment. Finally, she was awakened from the illusion of love and realized the absurdity and loneliness of human existence.

The story reflects Chopin’s exploration of how women pursue freedom and self identity in a patriarcha论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
