Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Significance of the Research

Oscar Wilde(1854-1900)is a famous 19th century English playwright,poet,novelist and critic who occupies an important place in the history of world literature.His works cover a wide range of fields,including poetry,drama,fiction,and literarycriticism.The Picture of Dorian Gray,as Oscar Wilde’s only full-length novel,isconsidered the work that best represents his artistic views and aesthetics.This worktells the tragic story of a handsome young man named Dorian Gray,who,after seeinghis own portrait,is bewitched to make a wish that“the portrait will grow old and hewill stay young forever”,and then degenerates step by step and finally commitssuicide.As Wilde’s transitional work from drama to the novel,The Picture of DorianGray is replete with a complex interplay of perspectives and dialogues and narrativesthat take place at different times,and thus deserves to be explored in depth both interms of narrative and structure.Scholars have analyzed and discussed the Chinese translation of this work from the perspectives of literary stylistics,pragmatics,andvarious translation theories.However,few have studied its translation from thecognitive level.Different narrative perspectives require different modes ofunderstanding and perception.The Picture of Dorian Gray is rich in narrativeperspectives and is worth studying from the perspective of cognitive narratology.

This thesis explores the feasibility of applying the proposals and researchmethods of cognitive narratology to translation analysis.It tries to analyze Wilde’snovel The Picture of Dorian Gray by using the concepts of“polychrony”and“hypothetical focalization”proposed by cognitive narratologist David Herman,andexplore the similarities and differences between the versions by Huang Yuanshen andRong Rude.By comparing the narrative time and narrative perspective of the Chineseand English versions of this novel from the perspective of cognitive narratology,it canbe found that the similarities and differences in cognitive processes have a greatimpact on the way the novel is written and narrated.This thesis verifies the validity ofHerman’s cognitive narratology in textual analysis,provides a new perspective fornovel translation research,and reflects the importance of the idea of cognitivenarratology in literary studies.

1.2 Research Questions and Methods

In this thesis,the present author tries to solve the following questions:

1.Is it feasible to use Herman’s cognitive narratology to analyze The Picture ofDorian Gray and compare its Chinese versions?

2.Which Chinese version better conveys the narrative characteristics of theoriginal work from the perspectives of“polychrony”and“hypothetical focalization”?
