1 Introduction

1.1 Research Background

Analogy is a rhetorical device,using as an argumentation method in writings.Theadoption of analogy in Chinese classics shows the thinking mode and logical mapping ofancient Chinese.It is often used to clarify the points and summarize rules.Analogy exists inboth concrete things and abstract principles,which can be life events,myths and legends,historical anecdotes,fables,etc.In the history of Chinese language,analogy sprouts early andis still full of vitality.Analogy is not only a form of logical thinking,but also a rhetoricallinguistic device.As a form of logical thinking,analogy has drawn the attention of manyexperts at home and abroad,but as a rhetorical device in linguistics,it has been ignored bymost scholars.There are many analogical discourses in Chinese classics.These discourses cannot only vividly illustrate the point of view,but also play an indispensable role in the processof conveying Chinese metaphors and ideas.Therefore,it is very important to translate theseanalogical discourses vividly and accurately.

Zizhi Tongjian,as a great book of Chinese annalistic history chronicle,has a magnificentstructure and rich materials.With its unique and profound historical vision and powerfulreasoning method,it has become an indispensable book for later generations.There areabundant analogical expressions recorded in Zizhi Tongjian.In the process of spreading ZizhiTongjian,accurate and wonderful translation plays a decisive role.Rafe Champion deCrespigny(1936-),a famous Australian sinologist,published The Last of the Han[1](Chapter58-68),Emperor Huan and Emperor Ling[2](Chapter 54-59)and To Establish Peace[3](Chapter 58-69)in 1969,1989 and 1996 respectively.

1.2 Research Objective and Significance

This paper aims to find out the translation strategies used in the target text and whetherthe translation strategies properly convey the analogical meaning.If there are somedeficiencies,some suggestions will be provided.

The introduction of Werner Koller’s equivalence theory into the field of analogy has certainresearch value.For one thing,it not only broadens the perspective of translation equivalenceresearch.For another thing,it provides a view for the analysis of Zizhi Tongjian.What’s more,the study has implications for the translation of Chinese Classics,for effectively explainingthe meaning and conveying the cultural connotation.

2 Literature Review

2.1 Introduction to Koller’s Equivalence Theory

2.1.1 The Concept of Equivalence

Werner Koller,a Swiss linguist,is known as a prominent German translation theoristwith great achievements.He put forward the five principles of equivalence theory.Detailswill be discussed later.
