CHAPTER IINTRODUCTION

A.Introduction to William Gibson and Neuromancer
William Ford Gibson(1948-)is the representative figure of science fictionliterature and“is often given the moniker‘father of cyberpunk’”(Miller 1).Gibson isa prolific writer who has won numerous awards for his works. So far,he has written10 novels and 12 short stories. He moved to Canada in 1967 because he was stronglyopposed to the Vietnam draft.Gibson felt that the economic power of Japan and othercountries was increasingly penetrating into North America and that the culturalinfluence between countries and cities was also increasingly penetrating into the lifeof Gibson, which influenced many of his later works.“Gibson is also a literary artist, employing the sorts of narrative strategies and stylistic devices associated withnovelists like William S.Burroughs,Thomas Pynchon, and Don DeLillo”(Henthorne3).Gibson mentions in the interview that“a lot of the language in Neuromancer andCount Zero that people think is futuristic is probably just 1969 Toronto dope dealer’sslang,or biker talk”(Smith 30).Gibson produces futuristic slang and street languagein his work by collaging slang from other cultures, reflecting the mix of diversecultures.Gibson draws inspiration for his writing from his own life experiences.Themajority of cities mentioned in the novel are places he has visited.A city,as a placewhere human beings live,is more than just a place to live.It is also a place wherepeople can identify themselves,a place rich in history and culture.Almost all of hisnovels are about images of human life in the future world. He discusses the problemsof self-identity,natural environment and place identity that people will encounter inthe future.Between 1984 and 1988,Gibson published Neuromancer(1984),CountZero(1986)and Mona Lisa Overdrive(1988).The Sprawl trilogy, which consists ofthese three novels,is considered to be the most representative work of Cyberpunk.Novels set in the cyberpunk world have a certain depth and predictability. It not onlydemonstrates the author’s understanding of human nature, but also has a strongpractical guiding significance.

B.Literature Review

As one of William Gibson’s representative works and Neuromancer hasreceived constant attention from critics at home and abroad.Neuromancer hassparked interest among foreign critics since its publication.Although the study ofNeuromancer by foreign critics is fruitful, the study of female identity, urbanlandscape and ecological crisis in the novel is most valuable.

First of all, many critics have interpreted William Gibson’s Neuromancer interms of female themes.Firstly,Carlen Lavigne explores women’s issues in Gibson’sNeuromancer in Cyberpunk Women,Feminism and Science Fiction(1995).She takes“feminist cyberpunk as a unique tool to examine contemporary women’s issues andanalyzed the complex source of feminist science fiction as political thought”(2).Lavigne also notes that by focusing on cyberpunk and female science fiction, readerscan better understand the text.In addition,Karen Cadora discussed gender, sexualpolitics and other issues in Gibson’s cyberpunk works from the perspective offeminism in“Feminist Cyberpunk”(1995).She arg论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
