摘要:本文是一篇英语论文,本研究以比伯(1988)的多维模型为分析框架,研究了艾萨克·阿西莫夫(Isaac Asimov)撰写的基础系列的三个阶段之间的语域变化。
1. Are there any register variations among the three phases of the Foundation series? If there are, what are the linguistic features that characterize the variations?
2. Are there any similarities and differences between the Foundation series corpus and the Frown K-N corpus? If there are, what are the linguistic features that characterize the similarities and differences?
Chapter Two: Literature Review
2.1 Previous Studies on Fiction
Many people simply read fictions for enjoyment, while literary scholars often analyze fictions for exploring their characteristics like the characterization and plot development in the works. In the fields of the literary writing, the term “authorial style” has been applied to refer to the linguistic habits of a particular writer (Leech & Shorts, 1981, p. 10). The authorial style of a particular writer may change over time. For example, it is usually considered that there is a big stylistic difference between Henry James’s novels in the 1870s and those written after 1900 (Hoover, 2003; Stubbs, 2005; Hoover, 2007). Similar alternations of authorial style are often said to be recognized of such writers as Ernest Hemingway (Olson, 1997), William Shakespeare (Craig, 1992; Demmen, 2020), Charles Dickens (Egbert, 2012; Egbert & Melhberg, 2020; Hori, 2016; Mahlberg, 2007; Ruano, 2018; Tabata, 2002; Tyler, 2013), and F. Scott Fitzgerald (Curnutt, 2010).
In addition to the focus on the style of literary works of one particular author, scholars are also interested in exploring the authorial style of clusters of authors. Biber and Finegan (1994) started to use the Multi-Dimensional Analysis to identify distinctive stylistic characteristics in the works of the famous authors in the 18th century. Egbert (2012) also conducted the same approach to explore the literary style of 19th century fiction written by ten famous writers.
Moreover, investigations of the translational style of fiction arouse the interest of many scholars. Hou and Hu (2019) conducted a study on the translational style of Howard Goldblatt based on the Chinese-English parallel corpus. Zhao (2020) used the MD approach to compare the genre features of different versions of English translations of Jin Ping Mei so as to describe genre variations of the translators’ language style and translational strategy. These studies proved MD analysis has predominately been a tool of descriptive linguistic studies, providing a statistical perspective on genre variation.
2.2 Previous Studies on Science Fiction
Emerging from the 18th century, vibrating with the technical change in the First Industrial Revolution, the concept of science fiction has been proved difficult to define (Seed, 2011; Suvin, 1979). There are several convincible definitions on science fiction. Hugo Gernsback, the father of the science fiction magazine in America (Gunn, 2018), considered that science fiction was “a combination of romance, science, and prophecy” (Gernsback, 1979; as cited in See本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
