Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research Background

It is well known that verbs play an important role in all parts of speech in English.However,due to the instability,complexity and polysemy of verbs,compared with thesemantic research of other parts of speech,linguists at home and abroad have paidlittle attention to verbs.Meanwhile,as a difficulty in English learning,mastering verbusage has been accompanied by all English learners.Therefore,it is important tostudy the usage of verbs.

Polysemy,as a universal linguistic phenomenon in English,has always been thefocus of linguistics,especially semantics.Traditional semantics focuses on semanticanalysis,using Componential Analysis and The Theory of Semantic fields to analyzethe phenomenon of semantic extension of words.However,such an analyticalperspective ignores people's own cognitive ability and ignores the generativemechanism and nature of semantic extension.Cognitive linguistics emphasizes thecognitive ability of human beings and holds that the acquisition of meaning ofconcepts is based on the result of human's interactive experience with the objectiveworld.And cognitive view attaches importance to the experiential,metaphorical andunconscious nature.Therefore,with the development and popularity of cognitivelinguistics,linguists have a new angle to study the phenomenon of word meaningextension.

1.2 Research Contents

From the perspective of cognitive linguistics,this paper will study the semanticextension of the English verb“take”to explain the phenomenon of semanticextension.

First of all,based on the prototype category,the phenomenon of semanticextension of the verb“take”is analyzed horizontally.The prototype category theoryis developed from the classical category theory.It no longer follows the“binarydivision”to judge the category of thing,but uses“family resemblance”to judgewhether they belong to the same category.Prototype is a typical member of thecategory,and is an instance with the most common features with members of acategory.Therefore,it has the greatest“family resemblance”.And“familyresemblance”means that all members of a category are connected by a network ofintersecting similarities.The phenomenon of semantic extension of the verb“take”can be considered to be realized through the extending of prototype members and thederivation of atypical members in semantic categories.The prototype members in thesemantic category of the verb“take”are mapped to the target domain throughconceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy,which makes the target domainacquire the characteristics of the original domain and form the atypical members inthe semantic category.Similarly,based on the“family resemblance”,the atypicalmembers derived from the extension derived again to form new atypical membersthrough conceptual metaphor and metonymy and other mechanisms.All the atypicalmembers expand outward around the prototypical meaning of the verb“take”to formmultiple semantic chains.There are interpretative relations and extension relationsamong different atypical members,and forming a semantic network.And it shows thephenomenon of semantic extension of the verb“take”.
