Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Research Background
The computer-aided translation theory and software is widely used in the commercialsociety in case of meeting the needs of lump-sum and ad-hoc translation works. Thecomputer-aided translation theory and technology is the integral tendency of socialdevelopment, its theory research part inherited the theory of machine translation, andimproved and development on its basis. It mainly improved the phenomenon of confusionlead and mastered by machine translation. The occurrence of CAT theory and technology andits research and development results in the social requirements of rapidness and correctnesswith regard to the translation, while at the same time, the actual social need also encouragesthe continuous updating and improvement of CAT theory and software.Legal English,as a branch of English for Special Purpose, possesses its own wordingand structure characteristics. Due to its unfamiliarity and usage among common collegestudents, the self-learning, especially the learning of its translation, no matter English toChinese or Chinese to English,which probably is the translation from English to Chinese inmainland China, is of great difficulty. College students, especially students who study legalEnglish,often have no other choice, but to read through the textbooks, other relative Referencebooks (if any), remember the specific terms by their heart, and do suitable quantity ofassignment etc. so as to help themselves learn more of legal English. It is the fact thatalthough the universities have been earlier enough to equip with English autonomous learningcenter,which often regards to the learning of common English that can be used across allmajors, and the network self-learning platform is often used with the installation of relativesoftware that can supervise the learning progress and task of college students including threeaspects of English listening, reading and writing, however,one autonomous learning platformespecially for students that study legal English, or to bring it to a wider scope, English forSpecial Purpose has never been found in any university.

1.2 Research Significance
The creative points of this thesis is that it propose to use CAT theory and technology instudents' autonomous learning instead of just using it as a translation tool,so that the CAT labin universities can be further developed for students' autonomous learning in legal English orESP, instead of just teaching them how to translate relative document with it. Via the actualevidence of questionnaire survey, the on-site interview, and the experiments that have beenconducted to test the attitude, depth and effectiveness respectively, the feasibility of makingthis happen can be concluded, thus giving the realistic meaning of making such comparativelyadvanced software use in a new way if its attached adjustment developed for autonomouslearning can be followed up with. And moreover, college students that major in legal Englishor ESP will have their own autonomous learning platform, i.e. the new environment based onit if this once happens. These can be summarized as follows:
(1) Propose to use CAT theory and technology in students, autonomous learning insteadof using it in the traditional teaching; namely,teach students how to teanslate with such theoryand software.
