英语口语在外语教学及职场招聘中受到越来越多关注。口语流利性也被视为学生外语交际能力的基本要求之一。影响口语流利性的因素很多,近年来,国内外研究者们都非常关注语块在语言习得过程及学习者口语产出中的作用。


Chapter One Introduction
The introductory part provides a brief overview of the background of the research,the main research purposes as well as significance and the overall organization of the present thesis.

1.1 Background of the Study
Oral fluency is considered as a reflection on what level learners grasp their target languages,and a measurement on verbal communicative competence as well.As is known to all,great emphasis has been placed on speaking in Second Language Acquisition for a long time,and oral fluency is viewed as an ideal and final goal for foreign language learning.In 2007,the Ministry of Education Office in China issued the College English Curriculum Requirements.The primary target for college English is to obtain the development of students’ability in an all-rounded way,especially in the aspect of listening and speaking,through which college students are able to communicate effectively to meet the needs of China’s social development and interactional exchanges.In addition,more and more employers attach the importance of university graduates’speaking abilities during employment,and oral English is one of the prerequisites for access to successful career.
Unfortunately,at present time most of our college students can not communicate in English,let alone with great fluency.Professor Xiong(2002)made a survey on oral English proficiency of college students.Among 122 non-English major participants, 73%of them were unqualified judging from the requirements of college English teaching syllabus.The performance conducted by 26.2%of the total participants was relatively satisfactory.And the remaining students,only 0.8%,were labeled as fluent speakers.There is no denying that the results are far from satisfaction for their lack of comprehensive competence.Naturally,two questions arose from my mind,that is, what leads to the current situation that most students are incompetent in oral English and in what way can help them to enhance their speaking ability.And compared to that of reading and writing,the literature in line with oral fluency is largely deficient. Great efforts should be made to incorporate oral fluency-enhancing activities into teaching.
Kormos and Denes(2004)reviewed the investigation on oral fluency abroad and concluded four tendencies.Towell et al.(1996)hold that the crucial point to speech fluency lies in the automatization of a repertoire in terms of formulaic speech units, often called lexical phrases,multi-word strings,lexical chunks or frames which are retrieved whole from long-term memory as if they were single words.
Going without conscious endeavor,control,and short-term collection,the words embedded in the memory are drawn automatically.Studies on formulaic language units provide a significant explanation on the fact that how spontaneous speech spills from the lips with time limit and cumbersome processing of daily utterances(Skehan,1998; Weinert,1995).The characteristic of our daily spontaneous speech is of formulaic nature as pointed by Pawley and Syder(1983)in that formulaic sequences with fewer
