摘要:本文是一篇英语论文格式,本研究构建了国际语言学期刊的学术论文语料库,对中西方学者使用的证据性进行对比研究。由于本研究考虑的是广义的证据性,因此我们应该根据证据的语义功能来研究证据在语料库中的实现和分布。因此,本研究发现了中西方学者在使用证据方面的异同。

本文是一篇英语论文格式,本文认为,学术写作体裁既需要对结果进行客观描述,也需要对命题进行主观评价。西方学者似乎更善于通过推理获取信息,并表达他们对知识可信度的个人态度和主观评价。这反映出他们对提出和讨论更高参与度的提案有很大信心。

Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research Background

English for academic purposes (EAP) is a branch of English for special purposes (ESP).With the rising requirements for English education all over the world, academic Englishdiscourse, covering textbooks, theses, academic papers, etc., has attracted increasing attentionin various fields of linguistics (Hyland, 2000, 2005). In recent years, the studies aboard havemainly focused on the teaching skills, L2 learning, and potential reasons for some Englishlearning phenomenon (Li, 2021), while the studies at home have primarily concentrated onEnglish teaching revolution, academic writing, academic lexicon, etc. (Li & Wang, 2019).

Evidentiality was first recognized as a special phenomenon in native American languagesby Franz Boas (Boas, 1911:124). In the early stage, it referred to a particular type of suffixwhich indicated the source of information. However, as Chafe (1986) considered thatevidentials involved not only the information source, but also attitudes of speakers or writerstowards the reliability of information, the studies on evidentiality in a broad sense havedeveloped from diverse perspectives rapidly, covering typology (Fitneva, 2001; Aikhenvald,2004, 2007; Blanco, 2020, etc.), pragmatics (Cornillie, 2010; Ran & Yang, 2016; Rozumko,2019, etc.), stylistics (Bednarek, 2006; Yang, 2009; Xu & Gong, 2014, etc.), and so on.

1.2 Research Significance

This corpus-based study adopts a qualitative and quantitative method to focus on theevidentiality in English academic papers written by Chinese and western scholars frominternational linguistic journals. It is also a comparative study on the use of evidentials byChinese advanced L2 learners and English-native writers both with a high level ofcompetence in English using, aiming at exploring their similarities and differences indistribution of evidentials. The significance of the present study are interpreted from boththeoretical and practical aspects.

Theoretically, the present study will prove that English has a variety of evidentials insemantic level. Different from some languages with grammatical devices of evidentiality,such as Japanese and some native American languages, whose evidentiality are realized incertain forms, English is one of the languages without certain grammatical forms ofevidentiality. However, evidentiality in English can be studied according to their semanticfunctions (Hu, 1994a; Plungian, 2001; Fang, 2006). The present study adopts the model ofevidentiality proposed by Chafe (1986) and revised by Hu (1994a), which has proved feasiblein the studies of different genres (Hu, 1995; Zhang, 1997; Yan, 2000; Sun, 2007, etc.), to look into the semantic devices in English academic writing.

In terms of practices, the present study pays attention to the evidentiality in academicpapers from international journals, which enriches the research on evidentials employed byChinese L2 learners in English academic writing. Chinese scholars who publish academicpapers in international journals are still second language learners, but few studies stress theiremployment of evidentials.
