Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Introduction to the Source Text

This translation practice is selected from the book Des îles, des hommes, des langues: essai sur la créolisation linguistique et culturelle written by linguist Robert Shaudenson in French, which was translated and revised into English by Salikoko S. Mufwene and others, and the title is Creolization of Language and Culture. It was first published in French in 1992 and English in 2001. In this book, Robert Chaudenson takes French Creole, the primary language in the Indian Ocean and Caribbean, as the research object. He opposes the traditional statement about Creole’s origin and advocates adopting a more complex method, taking full account of European colonization’s unique language and social factors. Also, he discussed creole cultures from many aspects, such as music, medicine, cuisine, and folklore.

The translator selected the first two parts of the fifth chapter of Creolization of Language and Culture as the analytical text of this translation practice report. The topic of the first part is Pidgins and Creoles. In this part, Chaudenson’s discussion on the topic of Pidgin and Creole from the perspective of sociolinguistics clearly shows that the approximate varieties of French are not at all associated with the sociological factors commonly used to define pidgin, and this part contains some linguistic terminologies. The second part’s title is French and creoles, and this part includes four sections: North America French dialects; French varieties in creophone areas; the terminus a quo: the language of the colonists; and the appropriation of French.

1.2 Background and Significance of the Report

Language is of great importance to the development of a nation, and it is necessary to protect the development of minority languages under the background of globalization. Wardhaugh (2006) pointed out: Among the many languages of the world are a few often assigned to a somewhat marginal position: the various lingua francas, pidgins, and creoles. The lingua franca refers to a particular way of communication that users of different languages find when they are forced to contact each other. Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, and Swahili have been or are being used as lingua franca. Samarin (1968) lists four kinds of lingua francas: a trade language (e.g., Hausa in West Africa or Swahili in East Africa); a contact language (e.g., Greek koiné in the Ancient World); an international language (e.g., English throughout much of our contemporary world); and an auxiliary language (e.g., Esperanto or Basic English). Pidgin and Creole are also called “mixed languages”, “marginal languages” or “restructured languages.” From the perspective of language development, Pidgin and Creole are two stages of language development, and Creole is usually developed from Pidgin. Creole is a typical mixed language and a cross-cultural language. Its formation and development reflect the process and commonness of integration of language and its development.
