Introduction
1. Introduction to Toni Morison and Love
Toni Morison (1931-2019), a Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1993, is one of the most famous and prolific American black women writers. There is frequent employment of political and supernatural elements in her works. What‘s more, her works have abundant and accurate historical and cultural contexts. They are so marvelous that they are just like grand epics. Nearly all her novels get attention in literary circles, which brings her many honors. In 1977, her novel Song of Solomon won the National Books Critics Circle Award. In 1981, Morrison made the cover of Newsweek. She was the second black woman who appeared on the front cover of a national magazine since Neale Hurston. In 1988, she won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, the American Book Award and Anisfield-Wolf Award. Her novel Beloved also won the Robert F·Kennedy Award. In 1989, she won the MLA Commonwealth Award in Literature. In 1993, she won the Commander of the Arts and Letters. Her great contributions led her to the Nobel Prize in the same year. Thereafter, Morrison also won the Condorcet Medal and the Pearl Buck Award in 1994. In 1996, she won the National Book Foundation‘s Medal of Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. In 2000, she won the National Humanities Medal. All these awards indicate that Morrison is not only admired in America, but also influential in the contemporary literary world.
2. Literature Review
As the first American black woman who has won the Nobel Prize in literature, Toni Morrison has always been the focus of attention. Nearly all Morrison‘s novels can seize the attention in the literary circles, which brings many rewards to her. Compared with Morrison‘s previous works, Love has received less critical attention, but it still has rich implications. A detailed analysis of Love from different perspectives is worthwhile.
2.1 International Studies
Toni Morrison‘s love caused a sensation when it was published in 2003. A lot of international critics have made different comments on this novel. Their studies are mainly on the images of the major characters, psychoanalysis, intertextuality, feminism and trauma.
The images of the major characters have become a hot topic under discussion. Venkatesan (2009:240) thinks that L plays an important role in Love, and she is the bringer of empowerment and radical change for future generations. As for the analysis of Cosey, Houser (2003:49) proposes that Cosey is considered as a mythical figure, but in fact, he is just an ordinary man who is torn to pieces by wrath and love. Wilkerson (2005) points out that Love revolves around the central character Bill Cosey. Even though he is dead, every woman tries to use her memory of Cosey to reconstruct love. It seems that Cosey has defined what love is. However, in fact Heed and Christine show the perfect love throughout the novel. Carden (2011:131) associates Bill Cosey with American Big Daddy Bill Cosby. Cosby is referred to Cozy, which means security and comfort. This is a homey feeling. In the film, Cosby plays a role of a perfect father and ideal husband who offers a safe and loving home. However, every本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
