Born in Ithaca,New York,Haley lived in Henning,Tennessee before 5-years-oldwith his maternal grandparents. It is his maternal grandmother’s telling him theirancestry’s story during his childhood that pave the way for his writing of the family’shistory years later. His father was a professor of agriculture at Alabama A&C University, which made him proud and reduced his inferiority complex about his black identity(“Alex Haley”).Younger than his classmates,Haley was not immersed in his study buthis imaginary world when he was in school. After quitting college,Haley joined theCoast Guard in 1939.During his service in the Pacific theater of operations, driven byhis interest,Haley taught himself the craft of writing stories and published his debutstory,“They Drive You Crazy,”in 1946(Norrell 85).Later on,he became the first chiefjournalist in the Coast Guard.

1.2 Roots:The Saga of an American Family

Roots is a personal family history while revealing the dark side of American history. The work begins with Haley’s ancestor,Kunta Kinte’s original life in the Gambianvillage of Juffure, which is an honorable life of having their own beliefs and traditionsuntil the abduction happened to him.Since then, the dark history of slavery has beenrevealed through the personal experience of Kunta and his descendants, including thetough days in the Middle Passage, the cruelty of the white slave owners, the loss offreedom, and forth on.Among the characters,Kunta is impressed with his rebelliousspirit, because of his times of escape, even though he faces recaptures and punishments, and his refusal to submit to the owner’s order and to accept the English name,“Toby”,given by“his”owner;Chicken George,Kunta’s half-blood grandson,is anothercharacter remembered by the readers because of his talent and diligence for gamecocks, which makes readers proud of the author’s family that starts to have a genius who canbe a equal footing with the whites. The whole representation of the family history fullyaroused readers’sympathy for the roles were only normal people but faced unfair andmiserable destinies.

As Haley claims that the whole book is based on the story passed by hisgrandmother,Roots unfolds in a story-telling mode:the scenes depicted inunpretentious words and the facts his ancestors experienced are recorded inchronological order with the vivid talks of the characters is rearranged(an“account”inTaylor’s view).Having the same setting in Southern plantation as Uncle Tom’s Cabin,Gone with the Wind,Roots also has the epic length and depth both in history and plots, and the same mass readers, and telling the slavery.Nevertheless,it differs from thembecause it is the first book from the blacks论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
