Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Celeste Ng and Little Fires Everywhere

Celeste Ng is a Chinese-American female writer.Born on July 30,1980,inPittsburgh,Pennsylvania,Ng is a first-generation Chinese-American,and her parentsemigrated from China's  Hong Kong before her birth.She grew up in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania,and Shaker Heights,Ohio.Ng graduated from Harvard University and earned an MFAfrom the University of Michigan.As an Asian female,Ng felt isolated and estrangedin that white rural community.Such an experience profoundly influenced herdocumentation of the Asian-American immigrants and the relative experiences in herworks.In 2012,Ng was awarded the Pushcart Prize for her story“Girls,At Play.”Shealso received the Hopwood Award for her short story,“What Passes Over.”Ng’s firstpublished novel Everything I Never Told You won the Amazon Book of the Yearaward in 2014.Her second novel Little Fires Everywhere was published in 2017.

Little Fires Everywhere,Ng’s second novel,was published by Penguin Press and won several rewards,including the New York Times Best Seller and Amazon BestBook of the Year.The simplified Chinese translation of Little Fires Everywhere istranslated by Sun Lu and published in 2018 by Jiangsu Phoenix Literature and ArtPublishing LTD.In this novel,Ng traced the intertwined fates of the Richardsonfamily and the enigmatic mother and daughter in Shaker Heights,a suburb ofCleveland.It is depicted as a false Utopia where people adhere to the principle thateverything should be planned.The protagonists of the novel,Mia and her daughterPearl,held different an attitude toward this principle.With her secret past revealed byElena,Mrs Richardson,Mia and Pearl left the suburb.Mia’s spirit influenced Elena’syoungest daughter Izzy.She broke away from her home and try to search for her life.

1.2 thesis Structure

This thesis consists of eight chapters.First,an overall introduction is given,providing an overview of the research background,research questions and the basicframework of the research.The second chapter of the thesis introduces the theoreticalframework,which discusses the development of Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS),the role of norms in translation,and the study of metaphor translation withinthe framework of DTS.The third chapter reviews relevant literature,discussingdifferent theoretical conceptualizations of metaphor,cognitive and culture-orientedapproaches to metaphor translation,and corpus-based methods in translation research.Chapter four presents the research methods,procedures,and analytical frameworkused for corpus analysis.Chapter five and chapter six analyze,respectively,the FIREmetaphor in the source text and its translation in the target text.Chapter fiveinvestigates the features of the corpus and the various target domains of the FIREmetaphor.In chapter six,after analyzing and classifying the techniques used to renderthe FIRE metaphor,eight techniques for metaphor translation are identified.Inaddition,the norms that govern the strategic choices in metaphor translation arediscussed.Chapter seven discusses the findings that emerged from translation analysis本论文由英语论文网提供整理，提供论文代写，英语论文代写，代写论文，代写英语论文，代写留学生论文，代写英文论文，留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
