Performance management and its connection with motivation of employees is never been more important as it is now, as increasingly more and more organizations are struggling to get desired performance from their employees together with keeping them motivated and interested in their job.

Armstrong and Baron's (1998) views on performance management were, 'performance management can provide opportunity for individuals to realise their dreams and aspirations, to provide job satisfaction, to enable individuals to achieve their optimum potential, and improve team work and performance'.

About the Company Pakistan International Airlines:

Pakistan international airline is a national flag carrier of Pakistan (https://www.piac.com.pk/PIA_About/pia-about.asp) and is suffering from poor performance in terms of profitability and services to its customers and therefore losing its market share. There are many reasons behind this poor performance, but most importantly lack of adequate attention on management of employee's performance through motivating them, whether in financial terms or otherwise, is (in my views) very important cause of this downfall.

Pakistan International Airline (PIA) will be used as case study for the purpose of this dissertation. According to Manning and Curtis (2006), the success of number of airline companies such as southwest airline together with many other airlines was/is due to high employee's motivation level through having performance related pay and other effective and efficient measure of performance and employee motivation.

1.4 Comparison with Southwest Airline:

Now if we analyse Southwest airline further by examining how it managed to reach on the height of success on which it is now, together with assessing the role of effective and efficient performance management system in Southwest airline which results in not only high job satisfactions among its employees but also was key to its overall performance.

Southwest airline was incorporated in the year of 1967 while Pakistan international airline came into being in the year of 1946. Southwest airline is the world's largest carrier with more than four decades in operation (1967 to 1971 as Southwest and then 1971 till now as Southwest airline) with a mission of 'continuous dedication to highest quality of customer serviced delivered with a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride and company spirit' is on its way to tend trends for its competitors to follow in efficiency, profitability but with affordability in airline industry where innovation is not very common.

1.5 Key Fact about Southwest Airline:

Southwest airline with its highest number of passenger and staff of approximately over 34,000 people (in 2008) is the name of highest affiance and least customer complaints due to excellent services within time with least problems in baggage handling
