Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research Significance

The theoretical and practical studies on drama translation in China started quite late.At present, there are very few works on the theory of drama translation in China and dramatranslators just put forward some unsystematic principles and opinions of drama translationbased on their translation practice (Meng Weigen 11-13). It can be seen that studies ofdrama translation need to be further deepened. As Susan Bassnett puts it, studies of dramatranslation are the least compared with other literary genres (1998: 90).

Shao Nai Nai De Shan Zi translated by Hong Shen is a famous drama worth studying.Hong Shen (1894-1955) has made great contributions to the development of Chinesedrama as the founder of modern Chinese drama. Shao Nai Nai De Shan Zi is translatedfrom the famous comedy of manners Lady Windermere’s Fan written by Oscar Wilde, thenoted British drama master. In fact, Hong Shen isn’t the first person to translate the comedy. As early as in 1918, Shen Xingren and Pan Jiaxun respectively translated it into Yi Shan Jiand Shan Wu. However, they both ended in a failure mainly because of excessive literaltranslation. On the contrary, Hong Shen’s translated text aroused great response as soon asit was staged in Shanghai; nearly everyone spoke highly of it and all the schools andtroupes chose to play it (Ma Zuyi 275). The successful performance not only showed thegreat advancement of the circle of Chinese drama in the introduction of Western dramaticarts and techniques, but also promoted the development of the stage art of realism in Chinaand offered valuable experience for the sinicization of Western drama (Zou Yanjiu 276).More importantly, it enabled the new drama to be accepted by the Chinese audience afterhard exploration (Chen Baichen & Dong Jian 104) and helped Chinese drama to get rid ofthe Civilized drama1in stage practice and build the relatively complete artistic form ofmodern drama (Ge Yihong 64-65). Its performance was regarded as the symbol of thefoundation of modern Chinese drama.

1.2 Literature Review

The drama Shao Nai Nai De Shan Zi has attracted a lot of attention because of itsimportant cultural values and influence and they focus on the impacts it has brought to thedevelopment of modern Chinese drama. Bai Bin (1991) thinks that the successfulperformance of Shao Nai Nai De Shan Zi indicates the drama script, which is regarded asthe basis of the dramatic art as well as the stage art, begins to be valued, the relativelycomplete system of the director is built and the actors begin to master the methods ofcreating images of characters. Guo Fumin (2003) mentions that drama is no longer thedramatic literature propagated just by words and truly becomes a kind of dramatic art inwhich the audience can take part in its final creation and Chinese drama begins to have thefull-time director and regular system of rehearsal from the performance of Shao Nai NaiDe Shan Zi. Chen Guohua (2004) argues that Shao Nai Nai De Shan Zi lays the solidfoundation for Chinese new drama and enables the Chinese audience to know thedifferences between the New drama and Civilized drama.
