It’s because the data collectors are professional in certain tasks and have a lot of years of experiences in the subject. Such data is very difficult to collected by individual researchers or smaller research team, as they don’t have such professional experts.

The first main disadvantage of utilizing secondary data is that it could not specifically answer the researcher’s research questions. In another word, it might not have been collected in the specific year, geographic area or specific industry, and thus it might not mostly suitable for answering the researcher’s questions (BOO and FROELICHER, 2012). The problem is that the data would be categorized differently than the researcher would have chosen. For example, only people aged above 30 were collected, meanwhile the researcher might need the data covering all ages.
The second main disadvantage to utilizing secondary data is that the researcher is not familiar with the data and how the data was collected. In consequence, when the researcher try to utilize the secondary data for answering his or her specific questions, the information of data might not fully suitable, either not sufficient to prove researchers’ viewpoint. Moreover, as the researchers didn’t involve in the progress of data collection, he or she would no well understand the link between the data and the questions (Murakami, 2007). So when utilizing those data, the researcher would slightly be misunderstanding about the data and his or her research questions.
